Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Williams.
Hi Sean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a graphic designer and party promoter in New York, after a few years of working as a freelance designer I secured a position as a creative director. This was a title I had aspired to achieve for years but once I obtained it, I realized how short-sighted my vision was. It didn’t give me the feeling that I hoped it would nor did it allow me to make the impact in my life and the lives of others that I knew I was meant to make. That all changed once I started a family. In 2016 while strolling through a grocery store with my baby, I was approached by an older white woman who complimented me for “sticking around to be an active black father”. Although I was deeply offended, that random uncomfortable interaction changed my life and gave me a new purpose.
It drove me to start The Dad Gang with a mission to change the way the world views black fatherhood. Combining my ability to create and develop a brand identity and the network I’ve built as an event coordinator/party promoter in my earlier years, I was able to position The Dad Gang as one of the nation’s leading platforms that is changing the narrative and celebrating black fathers and their contribution to society. It also led me to forming a 501c3 nonprofit called Random Acts of Dadness Inc., an organization dedicated to supporting black and brown dads in need and shining a positive light on the realities of the modern black father.
My success is the result of my passion, my purpose and my creative skills that I’ve honed in my career as a CD merging
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One major challenge was learning how to expand my organization’s reach and services to dads in other cities however, I was able to onboard many volunteers who shared my passion for fatherhood and changing the narrative as we continued to activate our campaigns on social media.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Since forming The Dad Gang as an organization and brand, I’ve become a full-time entrepreneur, philanthropist, activist and a 2x published author. I also serve as executive director of 501c3 Random Acts of Dadness Inc. which I formed in 2020.
I believe that supporting and elevating black fathers is my calling. There’s still a lot of work to be done but the impact the I’ve made as an advocate of active black fathers will always be one of my proudest achievements to date.
