Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Michael Howe
Hi Sean, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Geanies is a three-piece group I (Sean Michael Howe) put together in the spring of 2023. I’ve been playing guitar for over a decade and have played in many different bands since I was 14 (I’m 21 now). Geanies is the first band I’ve played in where I am fronting the group, however. I met our bass player, Paix Auslander (20, who attends UCLA), through some jam sessions with mutual friends a few months before starting the band. Later on we met our drummer, Max Bleefeld (21, who attends USC), through other music connections. We have an EP, “Can’t See the Sun,” that was released in the summer of 2023, and are planning to go back in the studio in January to record our first full album.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not necessarily been an “easy” road. We’ve struggled like most young bands to build a following, mainly getting good crowds to come to our shows consistently. But we’re confident in our songs and have great chemistry with each other so as far as the music goes it’s been great.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been writing songs since I was 14 and Geanies is the first group I’ve been in where I can bring all of my originals and play them, and have the rest of the band help shape them. What sets us apart from a lot of other bands is that we’re trying to craft a newer and fresher sound to the rock genre. All of us in the band try to combine our many musical influences (we come from backgrounds of blues, funk, jazz, and R & B) and create something interesting that people will enjoy hearing. I am proud of the music we have made so far.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think making the best music possible is most essential. If you can make great music that connects with people, that is the most important thing. When you have that connection, you can get it out into the world via social media, streaming, etc. After that, a lot of what else contributes to success is networking and supporting other local artists and bands who will in turn (hopefully) support you. It’s about building community through music. I think it’s crucial to be part of a community of artists who can build each other up and create and celebrate a music scene. It’s another way you can get your music out there and build a following.
