Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah C.R. Makins ARAD A.I.S.T.D. B.Msc..
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started volunteering at the Dream Center 6 years ago after I found out about this incredible organization from one of our dance clients. I visited, took the tour and knew right away I wanted to help contribute to what this inspired and hardworking group did for the people of Los Angeles. I have kept coming ever since, teaching dance to the children that the Dream Center ministers over in South Central LA. An absolute honour to work with this extraordinary staff!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a blessed journey, and I am constantly grateful to teach alongside the Dream Center staff. The bumps in the road go unnoticed when one is wrapped up in a humble passion to serve in any way possible. Life is a true joy when watching staff members bring light and love to children. We are all honoured to provide inspiration, motivation and any assistance possible to these incredibly talented children that live in meager conditions.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My passion is to help inspire and heal others through the art of dance. I blend storylines, spoken word, and dark and light themes that are relevant to the struggles and joys of today’s youth and young adults into my dance choreography to bring out what is in the heart of the dancer. This heals not only the dancer but also the audience viewing the performance. I have now started working with an incredible production company FRAME Productions to weave these pieces into short artistic films in order to target a larger digital audience.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk I equate to confidence and intuition. I try to “listen” to intuition for what my next move is to help the evolution of our combined journey. I then muster the confidence and faith to pursue that direction, knowing it’s the best for all of us.
