Daily Inspiration: Meet Sabrina Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Johnson.

Hi Sabrina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I moved to LA in 2008 to attend FIDM as a Visual Communications Major. After I graduated, I decided to pursue a career as a Makeup Artist and I attended Makeup Designory (MUD) in Burbank. I worked as a Makeup Artist for several years before getting my Esthetician License. I immediately jumped into the world of Lash Extensions and was a top Lash Tech at multiple salons in LA before starting my own business in 2017. And I have been the owner and operator of Bombshell Beauty LA every since!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building up a clientele was challenging. It still is. It’s a very competitive field and there are so many people who enter it as a quick way to make money. The result is a very oversaturated market with a lot of unskilled people. It takes years of practice to become very skilled. It was also a challenge to start my own business. I had never done so before and I didn’t realize all of the operations work that goes into the day to day. Covid was also especially challenging. Due to the lockdown, I was legally unable to work for almost a year. I’ve had to build up an almost entirely new clientele so it’s been a challenge but I will never give up.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I own an eyelash extension studio. It’s very tedious work. Lash Artists apply individual extensions to each natural lash. I do both natural and dramatic lash extensions but I think I’m known for my more glamorous lash sets. I’ve worked on many notable people including some actors who starred in my favorite TV shows. I was also named one of the best Lash Extension Studios in LA by Byrdie. I was ranked among many of the large salons I used to work for so that made me feel really good. Most of my former bosses had a lot of money invested into their business by their parents or families. I started my business with a few thousand dollars I had saved up myself so it feels good to be considered on the same level as the larger salons.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I think lash artists have a very personal relationship with our clients. We see them every few weeks and I have a few clients who have been with me for over five years. So you become very close with them. I’ve seen my clients go from single women to married mothers. I’ve gone through losses of family members with them. I’ve gotten clients ready for their husband’s or parent’s funerals and for their weddings. It’s a very interesting line of work because you meet so many different kinds of people from all over the world. I think that’s my favorite part about my job, just getting to know people and hearing their stories.

I am coming out with a T-Shirt line in the next couple months that celebrates the heritage of multiracial people, being a multiethnic woman myself. The Instagram is @Mixta.LA and I will be announcing all the brand updates there! I also do community work and any updates for that can be found on @UnapologeticallyBiracial, most recently I organized and helped teach a self defense class for members of the AAPI community given the recent hate crimes. The event was covered by multiple news organizations, including KCAL. All of my future community events and work will be posted there!
