Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Alberto
Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My business partner Alex Pefanis and I wanted to create something unique for creatives. Los Angeles has plenty of recording studios, photography spaces, and film sets, but we realized no one had brought them all together under one roof. So, we decided to launch 101-17 STUDIOS—a one-stop shop where artists, photographers, and event planners could have everything they needed in one location.
Once we found the perfect historical/industrial building in the fashion district, we got straight to work. We first opened the event space, and about a month later, launched the recording and photography studios. Soon after, our content/live streaming sets became available, and in just a couple of months, we’ll be adding a merchandise studio. It’s been quite a process, but seeing the space come to life has been incredibly rewarding.
Our goal has always been to make it easier for artists to create, collaborate, and showcase their work, while also giving them a place that feels like home, rather than just another studio rental.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth! One of our biggest challenges has been managing everything ourselves. With just Alex and me handling the majority of the work—along with occasional help from friends—it’s been a balancing act of 100 different tasks all at once. We initially planned to get everything up and running quickly, but the reality was much more time-consuming.
After launching the event space, we began hosting our own events to build a community around the studio. While that was exciting, it became too much to handle alongside the other projects, so we temporarily paused those in-house events. That said, we’ve attracted amazing renters who are throwing events like album release parties, gallery shows, and fashion shows—exactly the kind of energy we envisioned for the space. Once our merchandise studio is up and running, I’m excited to refocus on hosting more of our own events.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Before we opened 101-17 STUDIOS, my background was in event production, nightlife, and fashion. I spent almost 10 years as a promoter for Hwood and SBE clubs, and in 2020, I launched my own clothing brand. Alex, on the other hand, came from a music production background and ran a recording studio in Hollywood. So, it was really the perfect combination of skills when we decided to build this space together. We had also been roommates for five years and became like brothers through the process.
What sets us apart is our genuine focus on community. We didn’t create this space solely as a business venture; we wanted to build something that felt like home for artists. The feedback we’ve received has been amazing—many creatives tell us they feel like they’re part of something bigger when they’re here, and that’s exactly what we aimed to create. Our renters frequently attend the events we host, and that has made our community even stronger. We’re proud of how the space has become more than just a rental studio; it’s a hub for creativity and connection.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If you’re a creative, we’d love for you to join our community! Follow us on Instagram to stay updated on all the events we open to the public, or if you’re looking to rent any of our spaces, our rates are very affordable. We opened 101-17 STUDIOS with the goal of making it accessible to all creatives—whether you’re an emerging artist or an established professional. Keep an eye out for our new merchandise studio, which will add even more creative possibilities under one roof.
