Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Gonzalez.
Hi Rudy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m from Baldwin Park, California. Before I started Barbering, I was actually a music education major. I taught high school drumline and percussion at Baldwin Park H.S. In 2008, I had a change of heart and decided to dive into barbering! I always had barbering in the back of my mind as a 2nd choice in career paths. That came from my joy of going to barbershops as a kid. I remember my mother taking me to salons with her and always begged her to take me to a barbershop instead. Also in high school, I just happened to be the “homie” that happens to have clippers at home. So I would attempt to cut their hair in order for them to save the money their parents gave them to go get a haircut. I started barber college in 2008 took about 11 months to get my barbers license. The day after, I started in a shop in Norwalk. I bounced around a few shops and found my home at SWEENEY TODDS BARBER SHOP in 2011 and have been there since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! At the beginning of my career there were days I’d be lucky if I got one person in my chair all day. But that’s part of growing in this business, you’re the “new guy” for a long time. I call it paying your dues. We all go through it. You have to hustle but the only way to prove your way is your haircut! I am a strong believer that in this line of work, you never stop learning. That’s why I have never called myself a “Master Barber”. A term that now a days is used loosely.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a traditional barber. I love doing classic men’s haircuts and shaves but as a barber, I must do it all. At Sweeney Todds, we offer all the traditional barbering services. We do shaves, haircuts, beard trims, scalp massages, etc. The shop itself is one of the most beautiful shops out there. An original shop from 1957, so it really is like stepping back in time every time you walk in.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Getting to know my clients has always been important to me. My barber instructor told me you are not just a barber to people you sometimes have to double as a therapist. That is totally true and that is also what I love about my job. You really get to know your clients after all the trips to shop. I’m a strong believer in “you look good, you feel good” and I always try making sure my clients feel the same way when they leave my chair.
