Daily Inspiration: Meet Rubén Avendaño

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rubén Avendaño

Hi Rubén, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a Mexican immigrant growing up in Burbank, California, I was constantly amazed that movie studios were essentially in my backyard. I believed so much in the magic of filmmaking that, when I turned sixteen, I would ride my bike to studios like Warner Bros. and Disney once a month to submit a paper job application. Although I didn’t get a job at the time, it gave me hope that I, too, could one day be a part of that magic. Later, I attended film school, and just a few years ago, I found myself filming on the Abbott Elementary set at the Warner Bros. lot. From there, I could look out and see the very spot where my younger self used to ride his bike, and in that moment, I felt like I had made it.

Cinematography has taken me to extraordinary places, including an opportunity to film at the White House a few years ago. While film and television remain my first love and occupation, my true passion lies in creating beautiful images through photography. This passion has since evolved into an art business. In recent years, I’ve elevated my craft as a photographer, and I now sell fine art prints.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I grew up believing that I should simply be grateful to be working, keeping my head down and just do as I’m told. But after a few years in the workforce, being consistently overlooked, I realized that staying quiet and just being “happy to be there” wasn’t serving me. I decided to be bold and take up space. I developed a chip on my shoulder, feeling like I had to outwork everyone, but I soon realized that approach didn’t serve me either.

Now, with a few more years of experience behind me, I understand that success isn’t measured by the size of your bank account or the number of accolades you receive. True success is about balance. It’s an equilibrium between family, friendships, passions, and work. The road to finding that balance has been long, but it’s been worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a television camera operator for over 20 years, earning two Emmy award nominations and even having the honor of being invited to film at the White House with President Joe Biden. However, I would say my true passion lies in being an artist. Throughout my adult life, I’ve spent my time behind a lens, searching for beautiful images. I’ve worked on many culturally significant TV shows, and while I love that work, I see it as a team effort—creating a television show takes many talented people.

Recently, I’ve decided that I have something to say as an artist, and MY voice has found expression in my photography.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve developed a strong interest in topics like neuroscience, psychology, politics, and art. I regularly listen to podcasts such as The Huberman Lab Podcast, 10% Happier with Dan Harris, and anything featuring Rick Rubin. I recently finished his book The Creative Act: A Way of Being, and I must say, I highly recommend it to everyone.
