Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Kinnane-Petersen.
Hi Riley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
During the summer of 2015, when I was five years old. I used old vintage jewelry my dad had collected for me, and I turned them into fun one of a kind necklace that I sold at my summer lemonade stand.
Things got really crazy when my dad helped me create a website, and with the help of Instagram, my jewelry was being sold in stores all around the world.
Now I am 11 years old, sketching out all of my jewelry ideas, watching as we manufacture them, put them together, and then see our customer’s excitement as we release them. Every time I see my jewelry on kids and adults, it is just the most amazing feeling!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
For the business, we had to find a few different manufacturing companies to help us make my jewelry ideas a reality. We still put together and package all of the jewelry here in Atlanta. So we went from online orders to getting a call from Barneys NY and I remember sitting down with the Barneys buying team and just saying “yes” to everything. On the plane ride home, my dad was like, “We need to figure this out as soon as we land!” When we got home, we had a giant wholesale order from Barneys!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Because I am still in school (I will be in 7th grade) and school will always come first. I hired my dad full-time about four years ago. Every night when I get home, we talk about the business, sales for the day, Instagram posts (I LOVE INSTAGRAM, he is in charge of my Instagram, but I have a say in what gets posted) what needs to be done for the week, and what new items we are working on, collaborations, events, photoshoots, etc. I am the Creative Director of Gunner & Lux and to me, that means that I have my hand in a little bit of everything in my business. I am really proud of what Gunner & Lux is today, We are a business that is fun, fashionable, inspiring, and I hope more than anything empowering. We are not afraid to speak out.
