Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Lopez
Hi Rebecca, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
So I’ve always been into creating content on social media but never quite knew my niche. I also always kind of struggled having friendships, and had no idea why… but now I know it was all for a higher purpose. The two of these go hand in hand in the craziest way- I create content based on motherhood and I also host a mom group on Instagram called @socalmom.meetups. I had my son in 2020 and longed for mom friends- so much that I made a post on a discussion board in the What to Expect app. I posted to see if there were any local LA moms who wanted to talk, and eventually, it turned into us meeting up and hanging out once the kids got bigger. My son was born just two months before the pandemic so even though we hung out a few times, the world shut down. I felt like it was impossible to make mom friends when I became a mom and honestly, it was so difficult. The beauty of this time period? This is when I really started to create content on motherhood and realized that would soon become my niche.
Obviously things got better and what seemed impossible at first, became so natural. God gave me my little best friend and I was truly happy. I got pregnant with my daughter shortly after and had her in 2021- the second time of round was so much easier, but gosh was the transition of 1 to 2 children difficult. I knew at this point though, I NEEDED to find a village. I had so many things I needed to talk to other moms about. I started attending local mom groups around the time she turned 2 I believe- the first one I went to, I met a very close friend of mine (now) and thought to myself, “WOW. This is exactly what I’ve envisioned the past 4 years. I need to do this.” I felt it in my heart that it was my turn to start one, I just wouldn’t find the courage and right time until later in 2024.
Attending these mom groups gave me so much peace- I realized that my motherhood journey was just one of many. In July 2024, I had my first meetup and began @socalmom.meetups. I was SO scared- I mean people knew me on social media for my motherhood content, but to host an actual mom group in person and mix my virtual world with the real world? Terrifying… yet liberating. Each month from thereon, I’ve hosted 2-4 events per month around the LA/OC area and they’ve just continued to grow. I’ve met so many wonderful women + mothers through this- and am so blessed and fortunate to say that I’ve made the best of friendships through these. I found my village. The mission started as finding my own mama friends and relating to moms through social media- but has turned into something so much more- helping moms wherever possible find THEIR village.
Motherhood is so hard- only moms can truly understand that. But to experience motherhood with mom friends? To find someone to relate to, whether on a screen or face to face? It brings a sense of comfort like no other. When I talk to family or mothers older than me, they all say, “Wow. I wish I had this type of support when I was younger.” If I can be a part of something bigger that brings moms together and makes their journeys the slightest bit easier, relatable, manageable- then I know I’ve made the world of a difference. Because here’s the thing- every mom wants a mom friend.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly I’d say the hardest struggle was the initial urge to actually go through with it. From 2019-2023, everything seemed a little blurry having two kids back to back, becoming a mother during a global pandemic, and still being so foreign to motherhood. ALSO- finding the courage and confidence to put myself out there- I grew up being the shyest person I had known, I mean I truly had such a deep fear of attention + public speaking. I think that being afraid nobody would relate, find interest, or attend an event I hosted was more of an internal struggle, but a struggle nonetheless.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a full time stay at home mom, mom micro content creator, and a host of a local mom group. I amaze myself sometimes because I honestly don’t know how I do it all, but I somehow do haha. I’m so proud of all of it though- being with two little children 24/7 is not for the weak, but I know how blessed I am to be able to and how beneficial it is for them. With social media, I try to focus on motherhood, but I love to share a little bit of everything (which to be honest, is motherhood.) Our brains are literally everywhere!
With my mom group, I try to host 2-4 events per month in which there are some festive ones (right now for holiday season,) some with kids, some with the moms and dads, and some with just us mamas. I heard I’ve become a little notorious for mom’s night out, hahaha. I do my best to remind the women in the group that they can still have fun and enjoy themselves!
What were you like growing up?
Wow first of all, it is truly such an honor to be talking to VoyageLA and for it to be about little ol’ me and this mission of mine. Growing up, I was very academically smart and creative, but incredibly introverted. I was so shy!!! Oh my gosh I can’t even believe how shy I was, up until I became a mom to be quite honest. Growing up, I had a passion for making people feel loved (I guess this is a full circle moment!) I remember saving my allowance to buy family Christmas gifts, making special gifts for my parents as a kid, etc. I always had a creative headspace too- from arts and crafts as a kid to taking a fashion design course in high school. I think that’s what I love the most about being a mom, a creator, and a host- the creativity behind it all.
