Today we’d like to introduce you to qian sun
Hi qian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am good at researching all kinds of materials suitable for art therapy, and I am very good at metal fabrication. At the beginning, I enjoyed researching metal movable structures, but during my two years of study abroad, I minored in psychology and some other subjects, and I started to research on materials that can be used for art therapy, and my proudest design achievement is to incorporate pet dog’s hairs into jewelry accessories, a project that I have been working on for more than a year. Initially I just wanted to preserve some hairs from my pets, but I thought it would be more memorable to preserve the stories and feelings. Driven by this sentiment, I collect pet hair and use material processing techniques to create enduring jewelry pieces. These pieces embody rich personalities and emotional bonds, and are a tangible touchstone for the wearer to reconnect with cherished memories from the past. These works emphasize the importance of art in conveying emotional and memorial values, while also perpetuating the emotional bond between humans and animals, demonstrating the interplay between natural beauty and emotional support.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Looking back, the journey hasn’t been smooth, especially considering the limited research on dog hair. I had to conduct numerous experiments to explore all possibilities, conducting dyeing experiments dozens of times and creating hundreds of samples for the metal connections. However, I never considered giving up. I believe you must try three ways before you have the right to say you’re giving up. Fortunately, success began to emerge by the third attempt. The later stages went smoothly because of my strong skills in metalwork. A solid foundation was crucial. I always kept in mind the significance of my project, so I never felt tired.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I spent seven years studying fashion design in China and participated in fashion weeks in Paris and China. Specializing in haute couture, I developed a strong interest in jewelry over the following four years, particularly in handmade craftsmanship. I take pride in my perseverance and curiosity across different disciplines. I believe good design should be meaningful. Through my dog hair designs, I have garnered numerous exhibitions and media interviews, which I consider fortunate. My aspiration is for my designs to be helpful to people beyond their aesthetic appeal.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I collaborate with other artists to create new artworks together. Each artist brings their own expertise and unique perspective, allowing us to learn from each other, exchange ideas, and support one another. Additionally, I partner with galleries to offer customized designs using pet owners’ hair, and I also host workshops related to jewelry making, art therapy, and the creative process. I hope those who appreciate my work and wish to support me can follow my jewelry creations on social media. In summary, I welcome opportunities for collaboration, commissions, participation, and support, as they contribute to advancing my artistic endeavors and creative journey.
