Daily Inspiration: Meet Princie Patel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Princie Patel.

Hi Princie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My interest in makeup began when I was very young while I would sit on the counter and watch my mom do her makeup. From watching her do the perfect winged eye liner to adding pops of color, she was always trying something new. When I started wearing makeup when I was 13, I started with that same winged eye liner, and worked my way all the way to special effects.

I did originally go to university to further my education before I realized that I wasn’t going to be happy not pursuing my passion. I left university and started with college theatre, and worked my way through beauty, opera, editorial, film, special effects, and so much more, and eventually left Oklahoma to study at Cinema Makeup School. After a few (or many) bumps in the road, I am now fully freelance here.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Between moving back to Oklahoma after school, struggling to find work, Covid, strikes, working as a CNA, planning on moving to Atlanta, moving back to LA instead, more strikes, etc etc, it has been anything but smooth sailing. This industry has a way of throwing many curveballs at you, but I’m still happy to be doing okay in it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Simply put, I am a makeup artist. But in broader terms, I do anything from beauty to live stage performances to injuries to making monsters. I often also end up wig and hair styling. I am pretty well rounded and versatile in my craft as a whole as I never know what’s going to come up next, but I think that’s my favorite part of being in this field. I love that I can go from working on an opera one month, to a film the next, to a haunted house after. It keeps you on your toes.

Another favorite of mine is all of the amazing people I get to meet and all of the places I’ve had the opportunity of going. Meeting so many visionaries and being able to make art as a career is an amazing feeling.

How do you define success?
Success to me is not a destination, but a direction. It is all of the small and big goals we achieve along the way. Success is by no means a linear journey but made up of all of the progresses and failures that came before it.

For myself currently, success is being able to maintain taking care of myself fully freelance, but in my future, it is achieving the goals I have set out for myself.
