Today we’d like to introduce you to Nevi Outlyr.
Hi Nevi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started messing around with writing raps when I was 15 years old but didn’t really begin to engage in some sort of scene until about 18. I would go to the open mic on my college campus to perform weekly. It was there, that I got comfortable being on stage; hosting, performing with other artists, and engaging with the crowd. At that time, I also started curating events, such as small showcases and parties. But once I graduated and moved back to Los Angeles, I didn’t really know how to go about “taking rap seriously” until late 2021, when I attended a showcase where my cousin Konsole had a set. It was there that I met Mitchell James. After that show, I started to plot my first EP, “Broken Lease”. it wasn’t too much later that I found myself at a different show every week.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since 2021, I’ve met so many new people, spent so much money, and created so much music. Throughout that process, I’ve learned a lot about myself, the industry, and how to navigate relationships. My biggest challenge along the way has been learning where to place my energy. Whether that be, deciding when a business relationship is no longer fruitful for me and my team or, learning how to have a good work-life balance for things that I’m passionate about. Energy is a major asset, so it’s important to learn how to protect it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
If I had to give an elevator pitch right now, I’d describe myself as a Rapper, Event Curator, and Community Builder. I think I’m known as someone to works really hard to create safe, carefree experiences for artists, dancers, and music fans alike. Most times I accomplish that by having really organized curated events that focus on engaging with that audience through dance and genuine enjoyment of the art being displayed (painting, music, clothing, etc.)
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Most of my come up as been post Covid-19, However, some of the events that I was involved in late 2021 took place at venues that upheld covid vaccine mandates. I think, I just learned how certain policy positions can alienate your audience, so everything that you do, from the venue, down to the performers you put on a bill, should be done with consideration of your audience/community (values, schedule, concerns, budget, etc…).
