Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelson Chan
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Passion drives master colorist Nelson Chan to color perfection. As a young apprentice, barely 20 years old he worked in the top salon in Beverly Hills where he mastered his coloring technique by intertwining the client’s personality with hues that complemented their mood, lifestyle, or movie role. “A woman should be true to herself but her hair color can be an expression of what’s going on in her life,” says Chan.
Chan was born and raised in a med-low class family in Hong Kong. Starting at age 11, he started helping his father’s family business. His whole family immigrated to the United States as his teenager in the early 90s. He pursued his dream to study cosmetology, graduating from Citrus College in Los Angeles. Shortly afterward, he made hair coloring his specialty, and in 1995 began a rewarding two-year apprenticeship with renowned colorist Stuart Gavert. Chan subsequently became a colorist at Gavert Atelier salon. In August 2007, he boldly founded the new Nelson J Salon in Beverly Hills, which specializes in natural hair color, and created his hair care line called “Nelson j Beverly Hills” which quickly won the best shampoo award by Professional Spa Magazine. He created multiple source income business models by offering problem-solving services, products, and spaces. His business continues to scale even during the Pandemic because of this unique business model.
After pandemic, Nelson managed to double the revenue and also opened up a 6,000 sqft franchise in Downtown Los Angeles. The goal for upcoming years is to focus on scaling businesses and coaching other salon professionals to become salon millionaire.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not really, at the beginning of the business, it was like everyone else. I was Desperate for clients. Every day I would go meet with agencies and do things to promo. Finally, business started to pick up, but I got comfortable and lack of knowledge, I was not growing for 10 years. Until, after pandemic, I got scared and start reconnecting and search for answer of different way to grow the business. I have managed to increase double the salon revenue and opened up another 6000 sqft salon suite franchise in DTLA ( the first salon suite franchise and the largest salon in DTLA )
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Working very closely with my team is the main focus now. In the past, we always had great ideas to scale the business, but the plan always falls apart. The key element is consistency. I plan to double the revenue in 12 months, and we are leaser focus on team grow and consistency.
What matters most to you?
Just turn 50 years old and the way my business is my life going is the upcoming years won’t be easy. beside economic and I need to prepare reaching out to difficult time. That is including any sickness that my team and I might be facing. Life is short, you just never know. building the business as strong as possible to prepare any hard time coming.
