Today we’d like to introduce you to Nath Purandare.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Thank you so much for this! Well, honestly, I didn’t really plan all of this before time like most do. I was involved in adventure sports before I got into show business. I was having fun doing things filled with adrenaline which eventually came to a halt due to some accidents. It just wasn’t worth running around for 6 months only to lie in bed for the next 6. As a child, I always found some interest in entertaining people around me. Sitting a group down and entertaining them with the stories I make was my go-to thing. To see the awe, shock, fear, happiness on the faces staring at me, craving for the next step of my story, is something I started finding solace in. One could call it ‘lying’, but in a positive and harmless way only! So, why not make this harmless lying and storytelling my business? In college, I started off as an actor, contributing to state-level theatre competitions. One thing led to another; I started getting known for it as an actor. Something that made me feel a sense of achievement, short term, may it be. It definitely encouraged me to dig deeper into this field. Also, coming from a family involved in various types of arts, I always found the necessary support and guidance. We all faced a difficult time when COVID hit. I simply could not sit at home just looking at and listening to the stories happening around me. Even if the theaters were closed, teams were dismantled, I knew I had to do something. So, my friends and I, who knew less than very little about making films at that time, ended up making a short film in India. The product barely worked, but the process surely did! And so, a team was formed, scripts were written, pocket money was spent, and a couple more short film experiments were made. Eventually, I had to step into it. I could not let myself; rather, my family, and my friends could not let me dwell where I was. Hence I came to the States, to Los Angeles, where it all happens to learn and explore more about films and the business behind them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
“If it was easy, everyone would do it…” A close friend once said to me, then why was I doing it? Sheer love and passion for it, I must say. When one understands the true meaning of passion and love, I feel the struggles, no matter how intense and difficult they may be, they all seem like a walk through a house of horrors at an amusement park. We get scared, we hate it at times, we get fooled and betrayed by what we see around us but we don’t feel like stopping. We keep moving on finding the fun factor in every jump-scare that comes our way. There were many such ‘jump-scares’ along the way for sure. Right from managing finances to hustling for better and bigger work, from people slipping away from you to nothing going right at any given point of time. But now, when I look back at all the crazy, seemingly impossible things we did, like working 20 hours a day running on nothing but fumes to creating and producing a big budget production 10,000 km away in another country, it all just makes perfect sense to me. One thing I have realized for sure is that it was never easy, and it will never be easy; no matter how strong you get, the hurdles will get bigger and even more intense. But just as they say in films, the bigger and badder the villain, the bigger and better the hero!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Amongst all I do or have done, I have come out to be recognized by my peers, friends, and fellow artists as a Director, Actor, and Producer. Having contributed to more than 20 theatrical productions of languages like Hindi, Marathi, and English in the capacities of an actor, writer, and director, I am currently working towards making, directing, and producing as many films, short films, and visual productions of consequence as I can. To know what I can do and what I cannot do, and to understand why I cannot do certain things has always been the goal. In short, exploring, wandering into different terrains of stories as well as building teams I could call my family is something that I strive for. Some of the productions that were deeply appreciated by the people are BARBARIK, a musical short film involving the language of dance and theatre that is based on the ancient poems of Mahabharata, The Lucy Effect, a short film shot in L.A, and the most recent of our productions, ZAMEER, a political drama based in India involving veteran Bollywood actors like Mr. Jackie Shroff and Mrs. Anuja Sathe Gokhale.
I always believe that this field, this industry, these stories that we crave to tell are for the people, so believing in your craft, as well as not letting the idea of entertainment fade away, is something I strongly believe in!
What do you think about happiness?
A thunder of applause faces full of emotions, rage, rush, excitement, and love! These are some simple yet very complex things that make me happy. Of course, money can be added to the list, but it comes a little later in the priority chart! All the mentioned above, why? Well, to put it simply, we incite them! They are your creations. Not something you end up creating on a paper or on a piece of film but in actual humans with individual minds of their own. Isn’t that something? The tension before a show, the struggle before a shoot, and the fights behind an idea seem very chaotic, but for me, they are just the calm before the storm. And the actual storm sounds like applauds, screams, cheers. It looks like a big crowd of people, closed streets, and red carpets. And it feels like home and happiness!
