Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadia Calhoun.
Nadia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up I always loved to read, write, sing and dance. Entertaining has always been in me. It is what makes my family happy when I come around, they love when I entertain. I’ve always taken up drama in school, dance, and choir or was always in a bunch of activities if it involved showing my talent. When I injured myself dancing in college that is when I stopped being creative and took life more seriously. I began working 9 to 5’s and wanted to focus on a career to become financially stable. In doing that I still was active ghostwriting, singing, and acting locally in the city of Detroit. After beginning a family, I wanted to get back in the groove of creating. So, I published my first book as an independent author in 2019 “A Crack baby’s Journey to Beat the Odds.”
Right after I immediately started back getting into writing but it wasn’t for books, it was screenwriting. During the pandemic, my life drastically changed and I decided to step out on faith. I wanted to finally bring what I wrote and make it a film. Most importantly I wanted to begin to act again. Unfortunately, in Detroit, it becomes a fight for popularity, so if you aren’t popping at the moment you have to fight your way to the top even if you are gifted. And I’ve been out of the game for a while, so I decided to create my own opportunity by making my own film. My first film will premiere on December 4th here in Detroit in a local movie theater and soon after streaming on multiple platforms. My feature film starring myself is called “I Loved U More.”
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. The toughest battle was having to do research and put in time for everything I wanted to do in the entertainment industry. It took me reaching out, networking, reading, and connecting with the right sources in order to get here today. Also the challenges of being a single mother right now which is hard to juggle because I always remind myself that my 6-year-old son comes first. I never ever want him to feel neglected.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a writer, upcoming filmmaker, producer, and actress. I am known for always bringing light wherever I go, I’m known for dancing and entertaining. What sets me apart is my good heart, humbleness and drive no matter what comes my way I’m going to keep going. Whatever life throws at me I’m going to make the best of it!
A lot of people don’t understand the odds that are always against me but I don’t allow them to affect me in any way. I use that to go harder. Most importantly I get my strength from the man above, I inquire with him about everything.
Every decision, every idea, and every move that I make I go to him first!
What does success mean to you?
Success is happiness! If someone is living out their dreams and doing what they love every day that is what success means to me. If that’s being able to take care of your family that’s a success. If you’re waking up doing what you have always dreamed of doing that’s a success.
