Today we’d like to introduce you to Moving City.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Moving City started as an acoustic duo in Toronto, Canada during the summer of 2014. We (Andrew Facciolo & Logan Shaw) were friends from a small town north of Toronto, who spent the majority of their teen years smoking weed and being highly unproductive in almost every sense, music was not even on the radar. After both of us coincidently planned to move to Toronto at the same time we decided to ease the financial burden of living in the city and split rent on a 1 bedroom apartment (the den sucked – Logan).
Within the first weeks both of us realized we shared the same passion for writing songs and playing guitar. Although we only lived together for a year, we wrote a substantial amount of music, over 30 songs which haven’t seen the light of day since (with the exception of 2 songs).
After playing some small shows as a duo around the city we went our separate ways, traveling and experiencing some newer things on our own and moving away across the country.
In 2020, after being in contact and sharing music throughout the years we reconnected in Vancouver and continued to write and play music. Eventually through a friend (Kevin Schell) we connected with Chris Johnson to record our first record “2308” as a duo. Chris produced it and we hit it off immediately, sparking a new friendship and bandmate. From there we grew to a 5 piece band featuring Madison Norton on drums and Jan Toren on Bass.
After the Pandemic restrictions subsided we were able to pursue performing and started booking shows, all the while we continued recording and writing a substantial amount of music, putting out two records in 2020-2021 ( 2308 and LIttle Dogs) and one in 2022 our newest release “Nightflash”. We continue to create constantly and have a new EP in the works, although we are still promoting “Nightflash”.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been pretty awesome, I think all of us appreciate what we’re doing together and are just having fun. We try not to take ourselves too seriously and value the time together as friends and having music as a significant part of our lives.
Like many artists, Covid presented a major challenge in booking live shows and touring, but for the most part it gave us a chance to hunker down and hone our craft and ultimately create new music.
We love the process of making, playing and producing music together, and sometimes tend to avoid the necessary act of marketing/producing social media content, which would ultimately help share our music to new listeners.
That’s something we’re currently working on improving.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Moving City is a collaboration of Logan Shaw, Andrew Facciolo, Chris Johnson, Jan Toren, and Madison Norton. We range from the ages of 30 – 44 and are all inspired by various music influences. I think it’s special that we each bring our own dynamic life experiences and allow each other to openly express ourselves in the songs that we create and collaborate on.
We all have day jobs that keep us occupied, but share the same creative passion for this project. We are like this little family that gets to hangout, eat snacks, make music, and ultimately express ourselves together as Moving City.
That’s what makes us proud. We each have our own lives intertwined with music.. and it works.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that most people don’t realize is the amount of time we put into the band and writing songs despite our professional careers outside of music and everyday lives. We’re all constantly busy and make music a priority even though there’s so much going on with all of us. If any opportunities involving the band come up we’re all in no matter what.
