Daily Inspiration: Meet Mijin Kwon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mijin Kwon

Hi Mijin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in South Korea in 1995. Since I was little, I loved playing with pencils to draw. My passion for art deepened when I followed a friend to an art studio, where I explored different materials and tools. The studio encouraged this experimentation, and I also took art classes in elementary and middle school, where I experienced different mediums and techniques such as clay, printmaking, and sewing. I found joy in these activities, which naturally fueled my interest in art.

Art time became one of my favorite times, a time when I could focus solely on myself without any external concerns. My art teacher noticed my passion and recommended I attend an art high school. I spent long hours in the studio almost every day, reinforcing my desire for an environment where I could immerse myself in art. This led me to prepare for and eventually get into an art high school.

Once in high school, I faced new questions about my future: “What should I do in college? Which path will allow me to continue pursuing art with passion?” Despite my preparations for college entrance exams and art tests, I was uncertain about my direction.

Hearing about artists who studied abroad intrigued me. I considered studying abroad through an exchange program but realized there weren’t many opportunities available at that time based on what I wanted. That’s when I learned about the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, which had the curriculum I wanted. I decided to apply and have since graduated with both a BFA (Painting and Drawing) and an MFA (Painting) in Fine Arts.

Currently, I continue to create my artwork at my place and teach art to students at an art studio in San Francisco. I think teaching helps me draw inspiration from others and view art from an educational perspective, enriching my own creative journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say my journey has been both smooth and challenging. While I had a great experience studying abroad and enjoyed my time at school with supportive peers and instructors, adjusting to a new environment was tough. I had to navigate many things on my own even though I got help from others, and after earning my BFA, I struggled to find motivation for my artwork. Then, the pandemic hit the world around, adding to the difficulty. However, with the encouragement of colleagues, friends, family support, and my own perseverance, I found the strength to move forward. Attending the MFA program at the Academy of Art University was my next step. I believe that a smooth road is often the result of hard work and determination. So, I encourage myself to keep pushing forward, even when things get tough. I’m currently in a place of growth and won’t give up on my passion.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in oil painting, focusing on urban landscapes based in San Francisco. I primarily work on canvas and am inspired by the city’s diverse atmosphere, architecture, light, iconic settings, and varied weather. My passion for capturing these scenes stems from a longing for my hometown and family, which drives my exploration of the surrounding environment. This journey through life in San Francisco serves as both a rediscovery of comfort and familiarity and a form of meditation, allowing me to immerse myself in the present moment.

What I’m most proud of is finding joy in life wherever I am and striving to deserve the next step. Through my artwork, I aim to create a connection between the viewer and myself, offering a new perspective on familiar places or a warm greeting to those unfamiliar with them. I want people to feel a sense of calm and comfort when viewing my paintings, having a unique emotional experience. This personal connection and perspective set my artwork apart, as I aim to share my experiences and viewpoints with viewers.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
It’s difficult to say for certain, but in my opinion, the direction of the art industry appears multifaceted at this point and is likely to continue evolving over the next 5-10 years. In today’s digital age, social media serves as a hub for widespread sharing and enjoyment, bringing our focus toward novel and unexpected experiences. Furthermore, the integration of AI not only in real-life applications but also in virtual realms is being poised to expand our horizons. However, amidst these advancements, I anticipate a resurgence in appreciation for the unique and authentic craftsmanship of traditional artists. As the spotlight shines on visually captivating works, it underscores the enduring allure of fine art, prompting reflection on how to make a more seamless convergence between traditional and contemporary mediums.
