Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Gutierrez.
Hi Miguel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began barbering 20 years this year, straight out of school. I was only 16 and becoming a barber was just like any other trade for any working-class boy. Fast forward ten years and I was planning a trip around the world documenting barbers where I took on the name ‘the nomad barber’ Since then, I’ve gone on to grow my own brand with 2 barbershops and grooming products and I’m also a co-creator for the brand STMNT.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not – every step of the way there has been stress. Getting the nomad project off the ground was a huge success as I had to raise around 30 thousand dollars from sponsors to make it happen although it wasn’t easy. Through covid, there was also ups and downs and both shops had a tough time, with one closing and relocating and the other just about hanging in there.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think what I’m most known for is youtube and traveling around cutting hair but honestly, my day-to-day varies so much. I could be taking photos one minute, talking to a packaging supplier the next then editing videos after. I’m probably most proud in the fact that I like to take on challenges and I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty and learn new skills to keep the brand going,
What matters most to you?
I think balance is everything, as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to understand how much the little things matter.
