Daily Inspiration: Meet Michelle Ohm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Ohm.

Hi Michelle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’ve been a practicing artist and teaching artist since 2008, after receiving my MFA from Otis College of Art and Design.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My career has been steady as a teaching artist, and I’m lucky because it fills in the gaps financially of my studio practice. Balancing teaching life and studio life is always going to be a struggle, but I do find that each of them fuel each other.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make photorealistic drawings and paintings of women from film and television. These characters represent female archetypes and also females that I tried to model myself after while growing up.

Currently, I moved onto studying the ambiguity of narrative within images, specifically film stills. I am archiving how written letters/notes in film when taken out of context can lead my viewer into a completely different narrative than the one implied in the film.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My family and my dogs mean everything to me. I am happily married to my husband, Matt, who is also and artist. We really enjoy sharing a studio (our house) with our two dogs, Melon and Forest. When not in the studio we garden, cook and walk together at El Dorado Park in Long Beach.
