Michael Angelo Dimatulac

Hi Michael, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself with an opportunity to explore something new. My brother, Ian To, lent me his DJ controller, which sparked my journey into the world of DJing. With his controller, I created my first mix, “This that Slap,” drawing inspiration from DJ Eazy’s “Eazyslaps.” The pandemic’s lockdowns gave me the time and motivation to finally dive into something I’d always wanted to do but never had the chance for.

Initially, I was hesitant about sharing my mix publicly. However, the unwavering support of my close friends encouraged me to take the plunge. Their confidence in me pushed me to release the mix, and the positive response I received boosted my morale.

As I continued to hone my skills, I found myself playing at more and more house parties. It was during this time that my brother and mentor, DJ BRKN, stepped in to guide me. Not only did he help me land my first gig at a nightclub, but he also provided invaluable insights into the industry, teaching me the ins and outs of DJing.

Fast forward to today, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible individuals who have become instrumental in my journey. The “Rewind OC” team, comprised of Myron Marten, Chris Cruz, DJ Adri, Vincediminish, and DJ JBarr, played a pivotal role. Through them, I expanded my network and connected with Andrew Ha, GoodMorning Gabe, Nico Blitz, Lucky Lou, Jakob Mesina, Bawsa, Way2Pac, Zeb, and many others. Additionally, I became involved with organizations such as “OC Day Party,” “Hickies and Dry Humps,” “Peaking Duck” and “HB Entertainment.”

Their collective support has been indispensable, helping me achieve significant milestones in my career. I’ve had the honor of performing at prestigious clubs across California and even beyond state lines. Along the way, I’ve shared stages with renowned artists like Yg, Tyga, Blxst, Kalan.frfr, and more.

Now, as I reflect on my journey, I’m determined to pay it forward. I want to be a source of inspiration for younger Asian Americans aspiring to pursue creative careers, particularly in the DJing industry. My goal is to uplift the next generation of DJs and provide them with the support and guidance they need to succeed.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey hasn’t been smooth. I’ve been lucky to have supportive parents who are my number one fans. However, I faced several challenges along the way. Balancing a job, school, and DJing was tough. It often felt like I was juggling too much.

One major challenge was the nightlife scene. It’s easy to get caught up in parties and alcohol, leading to inconsistent sleep schedules and affecting my health. I learned that maintaining balance and prioritizing health is crucial in this industry. Finding a balance between my passion for DJing and taking care of myself became a priority.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My name is DJ Mazd, and I’m a DJ based out of Carson, California. I specialize in Hip-Hop, Top-40, R&B, and EDM music, blending these genres to create an exciting and fresh experience.

One of my proudest moments in my career was being featured in a documentary called “Do What I Want: Spinoff Edition.” It showcases up-and-coming Asian American DJs in Southern California, highlighting our upbringings and struggles.

What sets me apart is my ability to combine various musical styles to craft a unique and unforgettable atmosphere. Whether it’s Hip-Hop, Top-40, R&B, or EDM, I aim to provide an experience that resonates with the audience and leaves a lasting impression.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck and timing have played significant roles in my life. From the moment I started DJing to meeting people at just the right time and place, it’s been a consistent theme for me.
