Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Desveaux.
Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I live in a small town South West of Sydney Australia with my husband and two school age boys. I work for the Australian government in my daily life, I’m an author and also work as an author consultant in my business.
I suppose my life path was destined to experience loss during pregnancy. In 2017 I was seven weeks pregnant when I sadly experienced a miscarriage.
Then in 2018, at eighteen weeks during my second pregnancy, I found out my baby wasn’t growing and after many tests, she passed away at twenty eight weeks gestation. My daughter was stillborn.
This followed by heartache for many months. After a year, I was pregnant again. I miscarried that pregnancy too which only led to more heartache but determination to birth a healthy baby.
In July of 2010, I was finally blessed with my first son. Even though he was born through an emergency caesarean, he gave me so much joy. It was love at first sight.
While my son was two, I was pregnant again with my fifth baby. This pregnancy also ended in a miscarriage. Again more heartache just when I thought I’d been through enough of it.
A year later though and to the day of that miscarriage, I birthed my second son. Again via a caesarean, this time planned due to medical reasons.
Although I went through the trauma I did, I wrote about my pregnancies from when my daughter was born. This kept me going.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I can’t say my challenges were easy, even after the losses because I felt as if I was never going to have a baby. I went through moments of depression. And every other pregnancy I had anxiety. I honestly didn’t enjoy pregnancy like I thought I would. I can say though that writing made my life easier and I don’t know where I’d be today if I didn’t start.
After my babies were a little older, that’s when I wrote my memoir of all my pregnancies and the struggles I faced and from there, my writing journey began.
Today, I can proudly say that throughout these years, I’ve published two pregnancy anthologies and a book series of three called Letters of Love. The last being a dedication of babies who have died during or after pregnancy.
I’ve also published a number of journals.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an author consultant, I help authors publish their own books. I believe that writing is healing and from my experience, it’s been proven.
My mission is to help people write their stories so they can change the lives of others as well as themselves through their writing.
I’ve published a number of books now on behalf of my clients who have experienced medical issues or some type of trauma and I’ve also published a few children’s books too!
My next goal is to help authors become leaders of book collaborations.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
During Covid, we were able to spend more time working from home. Even though it’s been hard for many people around the world, I’ve been able to spend more time with my family and work on my business as well. It’s been a great balance.
There are many lessons I’ve learned during the situations I’ve been though and I think the biggest lesson was to get help when I’ve needed it, including coaching or having a mentor and collaborate with people especially in business. Writing for me was also really important, because you can see how much you have grown as a person over the years.
