Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Diconti
Hi Matt, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been surrounded by art for as long as I can remember. My grandmother was a painter, my dad was into photography and all kinds of creative expression, and that love for the arts naturally made its way to me. I didn’t set out to become a wedding photographer at first, but looking back, it makes perfect sense that I ended up here.
I was always drawn to storytelling through images, but it wasn’t until a mentor of mine, Robert Evans (a well-known celebrity wedding photographer), gave me a nudge in the right direction that I really considered making it a career. Once I shot my first wedding, I was hooked. Capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments—real emotion, real connection—that’s what did it for me.
Since 2016, I’ve been fortunate enough to turn this passion into a full-time business, photographing weddings all over the country. What makes it even more special is that my son, Austin, has picked up the family’s creative streak and now works alongside me as a cinematographer. So, in a way, the tradition continues.
At the end of the day, it’s not just about taking beautiful photos. It’s about telling a couple’s story in a way that feels true to them—capturing the little moments that make their day unique and creating something they’ll cherish forever. That’s why I do what I do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road initially; it felt like being thrown to the lions. I jumped into wedding photography without prior experience, learning on the go. Developing a business from scratch meant figuring out timelines, understanding the photos brides desire, and mastering composition. It was a challenge to adapt to each bride’s unique vision. Things were progressing well until COVID hit, shutting down wedding venues and forcing me to restart. Rebuilding the business meant creating new connections and essentially starting from scratch.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m incredibly proud that our photography business is a family legacy, passed down through generations from my grandmother and father to me and now my son. Growing up in an era without digital enhancements, I learned to capture natural beauty through the lens, honing a keen eye for composition without relying on AI or heavy editing. What truly sets my work apart is the relationships I build with my clients. I cherish the friendships that form and love staying connected long after the wedding day. It makes the entire process more meaningful and fun.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I love hearing the incredible stories from couples—how they met and where they are in life. One unforgettable experience was photographing a wedding at Calamigos Ranch’s Redwood Room during a downpour. The couple embraced the rain, and I captured a candid shot that remarkably resembled the movie poster for ‘About Time.’ It was an unplanned moment filled with genuine emotion. Capturing these authentic, story-like moments is what makes my work so rewarding and special.
