Daily Inspiration: Meet Mallory Callaghan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Callaghan.

Hi mallory, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

Growing up in New Jersey, I was born and raised in a tight knit city right across from the stunning skyline of New York City. A few years ago, I realized I needed a shift, and after commuting to Orange County for work, I eventually took the plunge and relocated to California. I have always flourished in a dynamic environment and felt a sense of liberation that the urban lifestyle provided. During my upbringing in the metropolitan area, I attended art events and trade shows, consistently inspired by the creativity and individuality of everyone’s style. The realm of makeup, hair, and all things beauty became my universe, and I wholeheartedly immersed myself in the vibrant world of artistry. As an emerging artist, I possessed a strong ambition and a thirst to learn, create, and deliver exceptional service in this field to carve out my niche.

After graduating in 2011, I worked as a freelance self-taught makeup artist and the following year, I enrolled in beauty school, ultimately earning my cosmetology license in makeup, hairstyling, and skincare. While pursuing my degree, I participated in a competition where I was awarded the title of the best upcoming artist for my special effects zombie look. This led to me becoming the chief assistant to a celebrity makeup artist for a haunted attraction named State Scare. This experience opened up avenues for me to educate myself across various styles and genres of makeup, learning from globally acclaimed artists. I began securing gigs with major brands, films, and commercials. It was behind the scenes of productions where I discovered my passion; I adored the backstage atmosphere and the intricate collaboration required to create stunning projects. Through my work in music videos, high-fashion photo shoots, and corporate productions, my purpose in the industry became increasingly evident. For each client I collaborate with, the experience has evolved into something much deeper than just makeup; it has become a unique bond. Reflecting on the past 12 years of my career, I still find immense joy in reminiscing about all the remarkable experiences and the incredible journey I have embarked upon.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As I was making my way into the beauty sector, I encountered numerous obstacles while searching for a place where I truly belonged. When I was just 8 years old, my mother passed away after a prolonged illness that deeply affected my family. Before her illness, she had so much fun in getting ready, applying her makeup, and watching herself and my aunts prepare for various occasions, often involving me in the entire experience. She instilled in me a profound passion for having fun with my appearance and not taking it too seriously. From an early age, I became captivated by hair and makeup, which became a bright spot in my daily life. No matter the challenges I faced each day, this creative outlet provided me with immense tranquility and inspiration. Throughout high school, I had a tight-knit circle of close friends, but I was never part of the popular crowd. Instead, I spent most of my time honing my skills, surrounded by many acquaintances. From sophomore year to senior year, I would go straight home from school every day to experiment with the wildest makeup styles I could find. This was around the time YouTube emerged, which ignited a passion for seeking out all the books and resources available to educate myself about everything makeup-related. I immersed myself in learning about all aspects of the makeup world.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Having worked as a freelance artist for more than a decade, I possess a diverse portfolio filled with memorable experiences in the beauty industry. I’ve had the privilege to travel, explore, and hone my skills across the United States. My journey began with horror film makeup, which then led me to Hollywood-level special effects. Gradually, I transitioned into the avenue of music videos and commercial production shoots. As I expanded into corporate projects, I found myself uniquely positioned to handle large groups of people independently. Following this exposure, my business began to flourish, leading to a steady stream of referrals, calls, and opportunities over the years.

One day, a request came my way: “Will you do my wedding hair and makeup?” Initially, I hadn’t taken on such a job before, but I decided to fully commit to ensuring my client would have an unforgettable experience on her most significant day. The enthusiasm I felt while speaking with her became my driving force; this was my passion. I set a clear objective to ensure that each bride I worked with on her wedding day felt as beautiful and cherished as ever before. This was more than just makeup; it was about creating a lifelong fairy tale experience.

When I reflect on my professional journey, I take the greatest pride in my mindset and enthusiasm for the numerous challenges I have faced. Upon graduating from beauty school, I encountered many obstacles, yet I possessed a strong confidence in my ability to create a very fun and memorable experience. Today, I am recognized as a skilled and versatile artist who you can rely on to bring their clients visions to fruition. I focus on weddings, special occasions, corporate promotions, and ensuring that the most significant moments are captured for you to cherish in the future.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
When I reflect on risk-taking and the type of person that comes to mind, I’ll gladly take all the credit this time. My birthday is April 17th, and I recently celebrated turning 32. If you’re familiar with Aries, you know we are determined fighters who often choose the unconventional route when it comes to embracing risks.

I was raised in a single-parent household, with my dad taking over my upbringing from the age of eight after my mom passed away. He did a remarkable job trying to balance raising me while incorporating the nurturing qualities typically associated with a mother figure for a young girl. Lacking a strong female presence in my life and being surrounded by men, I felt a strong urge to explore the feminine essence within myself. I devoured countless books and purchased every new eyeshadow that Maybelline offered at CVS. I was determined to step outside of my current environment, focusing on my true passions and taking a leap of faith on myself, believing that this was my calling.
