Today we’d like to introduce you to Malachi Del Rosario.
Hi Malachi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi!
My name is Malachi Del Rosario. I’m a 20 year old composer, artist, conductor and arranger.
It’s crazy looking back but my younger self would’ve never imagined that I pursue a life of art but here I am today with VoyageLa talking about what it is that I do as a musician and artist. And I’m extremely grateful to be able to share my experiences here on this platform.
When I was in middle school, I began taking guitar lessons. Instantly, I became very passionate about music, something that hasn’t changed to this day.
For high school, I attended Oakland School For The Arts in California where I studied Guitar as well as Audio Production and Engineering. The school was a hub for creativity, and being able to work on projects that contained different disciplines of art was very exciting! On top of that, the music education I received certainly paved the way for my admission into Berklee College of Music in Boston!
Berklee has a very similar environment to my high school and I’m very grateful that I have the opportunity to pursue my musical ambitions here!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I look at my musical journey, I would consider it to be quite smooth. However, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been challenged, I definitely have. When I was younger, I knew that music would be my future but I often struggled with my identity in the sense that I didn’t exactly know what I wanted to pursue. Over time, I was able to resolve why I felt this identity crisis. I realized that if I truly wanted to be happy with my musical identity, I had to pursue music that brought me joy and meaning. Today, I’m much more certain of my musical path as I’ve developed a sense of peace that has grown with my confidence in being able to decide what I choose to pursue.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I’m a 5th-semester student Double Major Filmscoring and Contemporary Writing / Production at Berklee College of Music as well as a Minor in Writing for New Television / Media. I’ve made lots of music ranging from film / tv, electronic pieces, as well as interactive media. As a Filmscoring student, I study lots of orchestral music as well and I incorporate many of its techniques and concepts into my own creations.
Aside from scoring to pictures, I am a composer, arranger, conductor, artist, and project manager. That being said, I don’t particularly like to limit myself to any singular title as I prefer to see myself as an individual with a wide musical and interpersonal skillset. I often ask myself, “How can I contribute to this project?” or “What can I bring to the table?” When I ask myself these questions, my perspective shifts as I am not strictly a musician but a collaborator, a partner with whoever I’m working with.
Currently, I’m writing and creating arrangements for several singers. It brings joy as I get to work side by side with an artist in bringing their ideas to life and the entire process of gathering musicians and managing everyone’s schedules is something I really enjoy!
My peers often describe me as an eloquent leader with great musical and interpersonal skills. On top of that, I have a very extensive network, often, musicians will reach out to me to provide them with contacts for their projects. I’m extremely sociable and communicative, which has allowed me to organize large groups of people for musical projects and even community service events. That being said, I’m a very confident person and I’m known for the ability to see work through to the end.
Currently, what I’m most proud of is my original composition, Psalm 17. Written for a string orchestra, I created this biblical piece to capture the human feelings of agony and despair as well as a sense of longing, which in this case is the longing for God. Being a firm believer in Christ, I’m extremely proud of this piece, not only because it’s one of my best works but because I was able to passionately create something for God. The experience of sharing this vision with the musicians who played my piece is something I’ll never forget.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I can’t exactly pin a certain memory but some very memorable and happy experiences I had as a kid included playing with my Legos almost every day. Left alone to my devices, it excited me to be able to create whatever you can imagine, with no limitations.
After school, I’d spend hours allowing my imagination to pave the way. I’ve created realities and stories within these Lego bricks and when I look back, I realize how symbolic it is. It’s a reminder to explore our inner child as a way to let our creativity run loose as well as remembering the times in which we were the most creative
