Today we’d like to introduce you to Mae Edwards.
Hi Mae, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
MUSIC I began my musical journey at age four, studying classical violin. I performed in numerous orchestras throughout my childhood, including the prestigious Jr. Philharmonic Orchestra of California founded by Dr. Ernest Katz. The Jr. Phil of California is one of the oldest and most distinctive young people’s symphony orchestras in the United States.
At age 13, I discovered my brother’s neglected guitar and began my lifelong love of songwriting. I believe I have written some 300 songs. But I can’t say they’re all good, haha!
All throughout the hairspray big hair 90’s, I recorded my songs at different Los Angeles recording studios and I formed numerous bands. We performed my original songs in L.A. clubs of the era … The Roxy, The Troubadour, The Whiskey, Club Lingerie, Madame Wong’s and Gazzarri’s to name a few.
FILM & T.V. EDITORIAL
My other creative passion is motion picture editing. I’ve edited long and short form films, dozens of documentaries and was a staff editor for the DISNEY Network FREEFORM. I won a few awards spanning my 28 year career in the edit bay including:
– an EMMY
– a PRO MAX Silver
– 8 TELEs
– Numerous film festival top honors for my creation: I.M.L.A. ~ A Musical Graphic Novel
SPIRITUALITY
I am a practicing Theurgist, Qabalist and Alchemist. Theurgy also known as High Magick involves devoted solitary study and daily performed ancient memorized Rituals. These Rituals remove psychological entrapments from worldly matters and eliminate the practitioner’s identity, so that the practitioner can assume her Angelic role assisting the Divine. Although labeled as Neoplatonist, these Rituals trace back to the original Wisdom, first recorded of humanity communing with the Divine. These Rituals are decoded from the cuneiforms of the Ancient Sumerians. Those who practice Theurgy are considered “Wonder-Workers” as the Divine then uses them to assist those who are suffering, to alleviate sadness and uplift and magnify feelings of loving adoration, deep profound feelings of self-worth and the light sweetness of Being in all of the Divine’s Creations.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road has been focused on non-stop work. Work was the only safe place. My only virtue. And so I was intent on relentless output and productivity. So for the earlier part of my life, my quiet struggle was watching everyone enjoying life. And on the flip side, I accomplished a great deal and so I look on my life as the accomplishments were the reward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a filmmaker and a musician/songwriter. Presently, my film/original music project is focused on the Moon: A 28 short film project called Lunare Lumen. Lunare Lumen illustrates the Moon, the Archetype of our subconscious through Ancient Lunar Astrology. Lunar Astrology is almost unheard of, but it came to use in 1100 AD by the astrologers and Magicians of Ancient Persia, Ancient India and Ancient China, pretty much simultaneously. Kings at that time recognized the power that the predictions of the Moon offered and so used this study to gain power, to subjugate and to conquer.
I am seeking to retell these Wisdoms through a feminine lens, where the knowledge is used in service of caring for the collective well-being of the whole … and the premise that Knowledge of Self is power to take back and rewrite our story for a beautiful abundant life.
If we comprehend our subconscious, then we know what makes us tick. We know what our secrets are, what scripts others gave us to read when we experienced trauma at their hands. We begin to recognize why we have patterns and where we tend to compulsively self-sabotage. Once we learn to be the Watcher of ourselves, we can then recognize where we are unkind to ourselves and get excited about flipping the script. It’s my aim for Lunare Lumen to show a path far less taken… where we are the Hero in our Hero’s Journey back to our original animation. To deeply understand ourselves with the deepest kindness and, as Bukowski is so famously attributed: ‘Remember who you were before the world told you who you should be?’
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was studious, mostly due to a disciplinarian mother. In fourth grade, I was tested for mental acuity and the results of that test removed me from my neighborhood school and had me attending a mentally gifted minors program. Somehow from that point on, I developed a debilitating fear of playing. I knew my mother, who already didn’t like me as I was, would grow in her disdain for me if I didn’t keep astonishing her with the high performance in my studies. When the recess bell would ring, I was terrified of going out to the playground. I would sit on the linoleum tile, right next to the door to my classroom and study. One day, a teacher noticed and sent out a flare for a meeting with my mother. They tried to tell her to let me play. That meeting got me one of the worst beatings.
As a young adult, if someone cared for me, it was quite mystifying for me to comprehend. If my own mother did not love me, how could anyone find me lovable? But fortunately, I developed an unshakable and profoundly deep connection with the Angelic Realm and the Magnificent Incomprehensible Creator of the All. So now, though I share a sad tale here of my childhood, I have overcome the programming. To feel as I do now, I have no issue with anything from my “story”. I am a relentlessly grateful and reliably happy person. Thank G-D for the crucible. So grateful for the resiliency written in my Stars.
