Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Blue Bird.
Madeline, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been tattooing since 1991. I apprenticed at the Picture Machine in San Francisco, spent five years working for Richard Stell at Pair O’Dice Tattoo, and owned my own shop, Blue Bird Tattoo, in San Francisco. I also worked for the late, great Lyle Tuttle twice! I’ve got a degree in fine art, and in addition to traditional tattooing, I’m also licensed in cosmetic tattooing.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I started tattooing, there was only a handful of female artists. Now we’re everywhere!

I’m known for my bold, vintage Americana style, and I love doing tattoos of fruits and vegetables!
