Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorena Cortez.

Lorena Cortez

Hi Lorena, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Born into a family of creatives, I was nurtured from a young age to explore and embrace my artistic talents. From my very first sketches to intricate sewing projects, I delved into various forms of expression, gradually finding my way to the captivating realm of video production. While studying apparel design and production at California State University Northridge, my desire to showcase my designs led me to experiment with shooting a commercial. Collaborating with a friend who modeled my designs, I dove into the world of cinematography, and from that moment on, I was hooked. The thrill of capturing moments on film ignited a passion within me that would shape my career path.

Following my graduation, I embarked on an exhilarating journey as a video producer for a tech company, traversing the world to capture captivating footage. Now, standing at the cusp of a new chapter, I am poised to embark on my most ambitious project yet—a big-budget short film set to premiere in December. This venture represents the culmination of years of dedication and the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, marking the next exciting chapter in my creative journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey of building on my artistry has been a rich tapestry of learning experiences, each layer adding depth and dimension to my creative vision. In the early days, I created for the sheer joy of it without pausing to contemplate the deeper purpose behind my art. However, as I’ve matured, I’ve come to embrace a clear mission: to amplify the voices of women of color in a glamorous and empowering manner. Viewing the world through this lens has empowered me to make bold and intentional creative decisions in every project I am part of.

Like many creatives, I’ve encountered my fair share of challenges along the way. The main struggle being financial constraints, which often hinder the realization of my ambitious ideas. The lack of adequate funding has often left them just out of reach or put on the back burner for a later date.

However, I’ve decided to put all my efforts towards one idea: my short film, Copacabana. By rallying support and fundraising $30,000, I aim to bring this project to life on a scale larger than any I’ve previously attempted. Not only will this endeavor showcase the talents of female filmmakers of color, but it also represents a powerful statement within an industry dominated by men. Through Copacabana, I aspire to break barriers, uplift underrepresented voices, and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable creative landscape.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a “jill of all trades” my work is a testament to my diverse skill set and boundless creativity, with my hands dipped into various mediums, including sewing, video production, graphic design, and photography, I am constantly finding new ways to tell stories. Each of these disciplines intertwines seamlessly, allowing me to craft immersive experiences that captivate and inspire.

My signature “cloning effect” sets me apart in the world of visual arts. This technique, which involves duplicating subjects within my videos and photos, has become my hallmark, garnering recognition for its ingenuity and aesthetic appeal. Moreover, my work is distinguished by its homage to the glamour of Old Hollywood, infused with a contemporary twist that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. By seamlessly blending the opulence of bygone eras with the vibrancy of modern-day culture, I strive to elevate underrepresented voices and showcase people of color in a glamorous light.

Among my proudest achievements is the opportunity to have my clothing featured in British Vogue in 2022. Additionally, my most recent short film stands as a testament to my ability to bring ambitious projects to fruition in record time, planned and shot within the span of just five days. These accomplishments embody the culmination of years of dedication, passion, and relentless pursuit of artistic excellence.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For those starting out on their creative journey, my advice is twofold. Firstly, don’t shy away from putting yourself out there, even when it feels vulnerable. Embrace the learning process and understand that growth often accompanies stepping outside your comfort zone. Be okay with the uncertainty and enjoy the journey.

Secondly, recognize the value of action. Your art deserves to be shared with the world, and while it’s common to have ideas, it’s rarer to see them through to fruition. Be different and take steps to execute your creative vision. Don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back from bringing your ideas to life.

Reflecting on my own journey, I wish I had realized sooner the opportunities available through grants and awards. There is a wealth of financial support allocated to the arts, waiting to be tapped into. Take the time to research and apply for these opportunities; the worst they can say is “no.” By actively seeking out funding avenues, you can alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with pursuing your passion and propel your creative endeavors to new heights.
