Daily Inspiration: Meet Lionel Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lionel Garcia.

Lionel Garcia

Hi Lionel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story begins with my father; he migrated to the U.S. in the early ’80s in search of a better life. He was able to find a job and save enough money to bring my mother and older brother to the U.S. to continue the dream of pursuing a better life. I was fortunate to be born in the U.S. and become a first-generation Mexican American.

I remember at a young age being told the stories of my father and mother crossing the border and risking their lives for a better tomorrow. Feeling blessed and privileged to be born in America, I could pursue or chase any dream my mind would conjure. Photography was the last thing on my mind. If I could be completely honest with myself, I had always dreamed of being on stage as the lead singer of an indie alternative rock band. Never thought I’d be the guy mixing the band or, let alone, be the photographer of the night.

It’s really funny how life works; we end up where we need to be, and it’s up to us to put our egos aside to answer the call. I worked at the 1411 Target in Rosemead right after high school and skipped college. I attempted ELAC for a semester and took recording arts as my major. I found it unproductive sitting in a classroom, so I decided to quit my job at Target and pursue a career in the entertainment world. I figured it would be ten times more beneficial to have a hands-on experience rather than sitting in a class for years.

At the time, I was producing music with a friend under the alias MAKENOIZE and made a name for ourselves in the underground electronic music scene. Unfortunately, it took a back seat as we both parted ways to rediscover ourselves. I started my career at The Montalban almost a decade ago. The journey began around the summer of 2014. I took the big leap eight months prior, left Target, and began my search for happiness.

I started off as an audio assistant at The Montalban. This is where it started to click, and I slowly immersed myself in entertainment. I met Gilbert Smith, who has mentored me for the past seven years. Don’t worry; I didn’t forget about my mother; this is where she comes into play. My father spent most of his waking hours at work, providing for three children and a spouse. I spent most of my time with my mother and was fortunate to have her. She filled both roles as much as she could and helped mold me into a resilient individual. It’s because of her that I was able to answer the call and fully dive into what is now my life.

Gilbert changed my family tree line and has completely given me a new lease on life. He taught me how to have confidence in myself and to overcome adversity. The journey was long and full of challenges, but I can now say with full confidence, “I’m ready for the next ad campaign.”

(If my younger brother happens to read this, “go big or go home.”)

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Is this a trick question? Haha, we would probably have more success stories and not enough time to write. The ongoing struggle that everyone could empathize with, ‘Am I good enough?’

Proving to yourself day in and day out that you belong and your work is valid. I go through cycles of questionable doubt more often than usual. I’ve learned to lean on my like-minded friends and individuals I call brothers and sisters from different backgrounds. Learning to be calm and patient with yourself is key.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I freeze time and strive to convey compelling stories through single images. Specializing in action shots, I am best known for my advertising work at The Montalban. I take particular pride in my up-close macro eye images and street photography. Observing the world unfold is therapeutic for me. What sets me apart from others? Nothing… Find what you love and summon the courage to follow through.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Funnily enough, it was going to the circus for the first time that left a lasting impression on me. The acrobatic acts were amazing. My family was considered to be part of the low-income community, so it was always a miracle for us to experience live entertainment. I was very happy that day, and it was the first time being around artists. It’s a privilege and an honor to see various artists from around the world performing on The Montalban stage.
