Today we’d like to introduce you to Laila Lopez.
Hi Laila, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a journalist radio personality/TV personality. I am a Los Angeles native and grew up in the city of Woodland Hills. Following high school, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue my dreams in journalism where I received a degree in communications from Georgia State University.
During my last semester in college, I landed an internship at the radio station hot 1079 in Atlanta. Once I began working at the station as an intern, I made it my business to learn everything and soak up as much knowledge as I could. I was only required to work 4 hours a day as an intern. However, I would stay up to 8 hours just so I can make sure I was knowledgeable of the ins and outs of every department.
However, all of my hard work ended up paying off. One of the radio personalities decided he wanted to quit in the middle of his contract because he was not happy in radio anymore. So that left a spot for a new personality. The two gentlemen I was interning for were the guys that took that slot and asked me if I would like to be a part of their new weekday 6pm-10pm Drive show. I was elated!! I had only worked for the station for 6 months as an intern and I’m already on the radio!!!!
From there I started my career as a radio personality. Which let me to work with other communication companies such as:
SIRIUS XM, IHEART MEDIA and NBC SPORTS RADIO just to name a few. However, being a radio personality jump-started my involvement in being an activist in the community.
Throughout my career as a radio personality, I frequently attended different high schools to speak to children as well as involved in community outreach programs.
Now that I had built my résumé at this point I then transitioned into television and started working as a journalist for TMZ TV. Where I help break some of the world’s biggest news stories. Also, while working at TMZ, I produced a pilot of a round table news TV talk show!!!
However, my love for radio never ceased so I went back to my first love and joined cast of a popular podcast IZM radio. Simultaneously I’m a radio personality at 101 jamz in the DMW area and also created my own skincare line called EBON ESSENTIALS! In addition, the next stage of my career, I definitely want to transition into doing more TV producing writing and creating shows. There’s so many ideas in this goofy big head of mine and I need the world to see it!!!! I’m looking forward to doing all these amazing things and expanding my brand !!!
If I had to give any advice, I would tell people to stay consistent. Be patient and communicate, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people that may align with what you’re trying to do… Put yourself out there, and be fearless!!!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road is a lot smoother now. But when I first started, it was a bit of a struggle. Sometimes as a woman, it’s hard for people to take you seriously in certain industries. I feel as though you have to work extra hard and show people how hard of a worker you are and that you can complete the task just like anyone else. As a woman, especially as a black woman this was not easy, but I was able to get past many obstacles with working extra hard! It wasn’t easy, but hallelujah. I made it this far 🙌🏽
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a radio/TV personality! (journalist) I’m currently a radio personality at 101 one Jamz in the DMV area. But currently live in Los Angeles. I do hosting and red carpet throughout the city of Los Angeles. I am known for my Corky/ weird interview style lol. What sets me apart from others is that I have no filter and most people do… Can’t say if it’s a good or bad thing, but so far it’s been working for me lol.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The happiest and best thing that ever happened to me is my 11-year-old son, Jase. He always makes me smile and is just as silly as I am!!!
