Today we’d like to introduce you to L.A. Geronimo.
Hi L.A., please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was a really confused college student who just loved being creative. I involved myself with tons of different clubs and events however at the cost of my grades; I still felt like I learned so much and took with me so much from there that guides me today. I decided to try to become a sushi chef because I loved food. I bought a camera because I love photography, and then created a business out of that. At some point while running my photography business, I was cooking every day and decided, “Hey Twitch is streaming creative stuff nowadays; maybe we should give it a try.” So almost six years ago today, I started The Hunger Service, where I cook simple and delicious food for gamers to learn.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not a smooth road at all. I struggled in college because I really didn’t find anything that spoke to me. It all felt so pointless, and I just wanted to get going and do cool things. After that, just grinding away at my business and trying to make ends meet was something that stressed me tons early on.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As The Hunger Service, I get to cook what I love (and sometimes what I know nothing about) on stream. I’d like to think we’ve catered a calm and positive place to hang out and learn about food and all the messy history behind it. I’m super proud of the community that has coalesced around the stream: they’re chaotic, wholesome, and overall a fun and funny bunch of people. I have and interesting background in sushi and photography. I’m a second-generation Filipino-American immigrant, and I feel that gives an interesting perspective as a creative coming from an immigrant family with lots of STEM expectations.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being able to do what I want to do and be with the people I want to be with. At the beginning of every day, I want to feel like I’m living the life my eight years old self was hoping I would, and I feel like I’m treading that path little by little every day. I love my friends, I love my family, and I love creating for myself and for people that appreciate it.
