Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine Bautista.
Hi Kristine, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Los Angeles has always been more than just a city to me; it’s my home, where my story begins. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, where the vibrant cityscape and diverse culture shaped my upbringing. My journey is intricately woven with the threads of my Filipino heritage, as both of my parents immigrated from the Philippines in the 80s, seeking new opportunities and a better life. Their bravery and resilience in starting anew in a foreign land have been the cornerstone of my upbringing, instilling in me the values of hard work, perseverance, and cultural pride. Their courage and determination to build a future in a new country have been a constant source of inspiration for me, shaping my values and outlook on the world.
My roots run deep in this city, intertwining with the fabric of its multicultural landscape. Growing up in a household filled with Filipino traditions while being immersed in the melting pot of cultures that define LA has provided me with a unique perspective and has enriched my life in countless ways.
At the age of 19, I stepped into the world of entertainment, a journey that often piques curiosity about my beginnings. My introduction to this captivating world began through my ex’s involvement in comedy, writing, and animation at NBC Studios in Burbank that opened doors for me. It was within the bustling halls of this iconic studio that I first dipped my toes into the industry, doing hair and makeup. I had the privilege of working on shows such as Telemundo, KNBC News, Access Hollywood, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. These early experiences not only honed my skills but also ignited a passion for the dynamic and ever-evolving world of entertainment that continues to drive me forward to this day.
From that moment onward, my path was set ablaze with the sparks of ambition and determination, propelling me forward on an exhilarating journey filled with challenges and triumphs. These early experiences also provided me with invaluable insights and connections that would shape my journey in the years to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success in the entertainment industry hasn’t always been smooth sailing, often presenting its fair share of obstacles along the way. Whether it’s managing demanding talent, facing rejection, or navigating through office politics, every step forward has come with its share of obstacles. In an environment where egos can run high and opinions clash, having a resilient spirit, tough skin, and unwavering resolve to navigate effectively is imperative. The constant pressure to perform at a high level while also managing interpersonal dynamics can take its toll. However, it’s these very challenges that have strengthened my resolve and equipped me with the resilience needed to thrive in this competitive landscape.
The entertainment industry also presents other challenges, including grueling hours and extensive travel demands. Long hours on set, from early morning call times to late-night shoots, the relentless pace can take a toll on both physical and mental well-being. Balancing my work commitments with personal life can become increasingly challenging when faced with such demanding schedules. Furthermore, frequent travel for location shoots or promotional tours adds another layer of complexity, disrupting routines and requiring adaptability to new environments. Despite the sacrifices and hardships, the opportunity to bring stories to life and collaborate with talented individuals continues to fuel my passion and drive to succeed in this ever-evolving industry.
Navigating the multifaceted landscape of the entertainment industry entails more than just mastering the craft; maintaining a good reputation within the entertainment industry is paramount for longevity and success. In an industry built on relationships and word-of-mouth recommendations, a good reputation serves as a golden ticket to success. It’s not just about delivering exceptional work; a positive reputation not only opens doors to new opportunities but also fosters trust and collaboration with industry peers. Productions often operate as tight-knit communities, and individuals with a reputation for professionalism, reliability, mutual respect, and positive collaboration are highly sought after. This favorable perception not only increases the likelihood of being hired for a production but also opens doors to future opportunities.
Conversely, a tarnished reputation, whether due to past conflicts, unreliability, or unprofessional behavior, can quickly sour impressions and quickly derail a career, hindering future prospects and casting doubt on one’s credibility. Thus, in an industry where reputation precedes you, nurturing a positive image is essential for securing coveted positions and thriving in the competitive landscape of entertainment.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a hairstylist specializing in TV and film, where I excel in creating hairstyles that breathe life into characters on screen. I’m known for my versatility in crafting period-accurate styles, avant-garde looks, and everything in between from classic looks to cutting-edge styles. What I’m most proud of are the projects I’ve contributed to – such as Justified, Santa Clarita Diet, Passions, The Player, AP Bio, Pretty Little Liars – and the lasting relationships I’ve built within the industry, turning colleagues into close-knit family.
In addition to my creative skills, I’ve taken on department head positions, which have honed my ability to run my department smoothly. This has involved overseeing all aspects of hair styling, from conceptualization to execution, and collaborating closely with producers, directors, and other departments to ensure seamless integration of hair designs with the overall vision of the production.
What sets me apart is my commitment to excellence and my ability to adapt to the unique needs of each project. I thrive on challenges and enjoy pushing the boundaries of hairstyling to create memorable looks that enhance the storytelling experience. Whether it’s working on a period drama, a fantasy epic, or a modern-day thriller, I bring a high level of professionalism, creativity, and attention to detail to every project. My passion for my craft and dedication to my team are what truly set me apart in the industry.
Any big plans?
In the future, I plan to continue honing my craft as a hairstylist in the TV and film industry. I’m always looking forward to new challenges and opportunities to expand my skills and portfolio. While I’ve had a successful career working on episodic projects – which are hour-long dramas – I’m eager to explore new opportunities and challenges, particularly in the realm of films and sitcoms. These mediums offer a different pace, present a different dynamic, and offer unique opportunities to showcase a diverse range of hairstyles and characters.
Additionally, I’m keen to stay updated on the latest trends and techniques in hairstyling, ensuring that I can offer fresh and innovative looks for the ever-evolving world of entertainment.
