Daily Inspiration: Meet Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith

Hi Kaitlyn Aurelia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a composer/synthesist/producer. I began playing classical guitar as a teenager. I studied sound engineering & composition in college. After I graduated university, I discovered modular synthesis by chance. I was feeling discouraged & decided to give up pursuing music as a career and was talking to a neighbor about it. He lent me a Buchla 100 synthesizer for a year and it sparked a new form of music making for me. At the time I was farming & I began creating audio journal entries about what I did on the farm with the Buchla and posting them online. I now combine electronic instruments, orchestral instruments & my voice.
I have a new album coming out in 2025 and am currently working on the next Touchtheplants compilation album… and more projects that I am excited to share when they are complete.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been both. I work really hard and love making / sharing music. Finding balance has been my biggest challenge. I love to create & love to collaborate & have been learning how to keep a balance of input / output so I can stay inspired and ready to create. I had a teacher say to me once, “live your life so you have something to create about”. I return to that often.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make music that combines modular synthesis, sound design, orchestral instruments & voice.
I love to create sonic eco systems.
I love to create environments and songs that spark curiosity & presence.
The first time I heard Steve Reichs “Music for 18 musicians” It felt like it brought everything in the room to life, like every texture and inanimate object became animated.
I love personification & that listening moment solidified an intention for me.
I love to create sounds that highlight life that is always around us but maybe not being noticed – and give it a “moment”.
