Today we’d like to introduce you to Kai Fujimoto Aqua Lucca Head Spa.
Hi Kai Fujimoto, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my career in Tokyo about 20 years ago, where I first discovered the beauty of the Japanese head spa and shiatsu scalp massage at the first salon I worked at. Over the years, I came to understand that while many people focus on their hair, very few truly recognize the vital importance of scalp care. For me, healthy hair always begins with a healthy scalp. I was deeply inspired by how relaxation, stillness, and hospitality come together so naturally in this practice, which is deeply rooted in Japanese culture.
Two years ago, I decided to bring that healing philosophy to life and created Aqua Lucca Head Spa in West Hollywood. The name Aqua Lucca holds special meaning: it represents water and light. Water symbolizes healing, and light represents guidance. My goal was to create a sanctuary where people could experience deep relaxation while learning how to care for their scalp and hair from the root, through a method that stays true to Japanese culture and authenticity.
Since opening in April 2024, Aqua Lucca Head Spa has been growing beautifully, sharing the art of the Japanese head spa with clients who seek balance, beauty, and inner calm.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building Aqua Lucca Head Spa has been an incredibly rewarding experience, but it hasn’t always been easy. One of the biggest challenges has been helping people truly understand what a head spa is and who can perform it. Many clients initially assumed that I was a massage therapist rather than a hairstylist, since the service includes elements of relaxation and shiatsu scalp massage. However, a proper head spa also involves shampooing, scalp care, and blow-drying, which in California legally requires a cosmetology license.
That misunderstanding made it difficult at first to establish the true identity of the service. Many people didn’t realize that head spa is not just a spa treatment; it’s a specialized beauty practice that blends technical skill with therapeutic care, creating a balance between healing touch and professional hairstyling.
Because of this, my mission is to normalize hairstylists providing scalp care services. I want people to understand that hairstylists don’t just care for hair; we care for the scalp too. My goal moving forward is to continue raising awareness and helping make scalp care a recognized and standard part of beauty culture in the United States.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in Japanese head spa and have developed my own technique called the Aqua Lucca Head Spa Method, which blends traditional Japanese scalp care with modern relaxation and wellness practices. My work focuses on creating an experience that heals both the scalp and the mind through touch, stillness, and hospitality.
I’m proud to be working closely with juliArt, based in Taiwan, and Simply Organic Beauty in the United States to raise the standard of scalp care education and awareness nationwide. As a Global Head Spa Educator, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with companies that share my vision for elevating scalp health and supporting professionals who want to grow in this field.
What truly sets my work apart is the intention behind every service. I listen closely and sense what each client needs, not only through scalp analysis but also through their body and energy. If I notice tension in the shoulders that connects to the jaw, I’ll focus there to help ease it. My approach is intuitive and rooted in empathy, guided by the spirit of Japanese hospitality, yet supported by deep knowledge and study. I have learned shiatsu scalp massage and understand the science behind every scalp condition and each product I use. This allows me to customize treatments with precision and purpose. My movements flow naturally with each client’s rhythm, creating a calm and restorative experience that helps release tension and bring the scalp, mind, and body into balance.
For me, head spa is not only about creativity or relaxation. It’s about blending intuition with expertise to deliver care of the highest quality. Everything I do is intentional and designed to bring comfort and harmony. My goal is always to improve both scalp health and overall well-being, so each client leaves feeling lighter, balanced, and deeply cared for.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people are surprised to learn how physically demanding this work can be. I train with HIIT workouts at least twice a week, sometimes three, to keep up my strength and stamina for long days of head spa sessions. Shiatsu scalp massage requires focus, control, and consistent pressure, and many clients love a firm, steady touch. Staying strong helps me maintain that same level of care and energy from the first client to the last.
I currently work four days a week at my own head spa, Aqua Lucca, and three days a week at Head Spa Nagomi in Beverly Hills. They’re an amazing head spa, and I’m proud to work there as both a head spa therapist and an educator, training the team and support the incredible level of care we provide together.
Balancing two locations means I’m physically working seven days a week with no days off, but I truly love what I do. What makes it possible is my amazing and beautiful partner, who supports me through everything, and our three beautiful kitties who bring joy and calm into my life. My clients come to me to restore their energy, and I recharge at home. That balance keeps me grounded, happy, and inspired to keep giving my best every day.
