Daily Inspiration: Meet Judy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy.

Hi Judy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Judy Maina, but many know me as Nurse Judy. I’m a Health and Lifestyle content creator and Registered Nurse based in California, USA.

I was born and raised in Kariandusi, Nakuru County, Kenya  and that’s where my journey began. Growing up in Kenya shaped so much of who I am the hustle, the heart, and the deep love for family.

I trained as a nurse in Kenya and had the privilege of serving in one of the country’s top private hospitals. But as passionate as I was about healthcare, I knew I wanted more  for myself, my children, and my future.

Eventually, I got a life-changing opportunity to move to the United States and work as a Registered Nurse. It wasn’t easy; in fact, it took every ounce of faith and courage I had. But by God’s grace, I made it.

Now, I’m a proud wife to my amazing husband Denis Pasha, and mom to our two beautiful children, Teiyan Pasha and Dashan Pasha. They are my biggest motivation and the reason I push through every challenge.

Even though I’m blessed to live and work abroad, my roots are in Kenya. I miss my family deeply. The distance can be painful, but it also reminds me how powerful love and connection truly are.

Above all, I value family, faith, and purpose  and I use my platform to uplift, educate, and inspire anyone who’s walking a path similar to mine.

If you’re dreaming big but don’t know where to start  stay close. My story is proof that you don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Behind every smile, every post, and every “win” you see online, there’s a journey filled with struggle, sacrifice, and silent battles.

One of the biggest challenges was leaving Kenya with a dream but very little certainty. I came to the U.S. on a visit visa not knowing exactly how it would all work out. I had to navigate immigration hurdles, homesickness, loneliness, and the pressure to succeed  not just for myself, but for my children and my family back home.

I’ve cried in bathrooms after long shifts. I’ve questioned my decisions. I’ve missed birthdays and moments I can never get back because I was chasing a better life for my family.

Financially, transitioning into the U.S. healthcare system was tough. It cost me nearly a million shillings  and that’s not even counting the emotional cost. But I was determined to make it work with God, grit, and grace.

There was also the challenge of starting over in a new country, adapting to a new culture, passing the NCLEX, and proving myself all over again. Even now, as a nurse, mom, content creator, and wife, I still have days where I feel stretched thin. But I always remind myself where I started and why I started.

The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been worth it. Every obstacle taught me that your past does not define your future.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I wear a few hats  and scrubs  proudly and passionately.

I’m a registered nurse in the United States with a background in acute and inpatient care. I specialize in patient-centered care, especially within multicultural communities. Nursing isn’t just my profession  it’s my calling. I feel most fulfilled when I bring calm, clarity, and compassion to people during their most vulnerable moments.

But that’s just one side of me.

I’m also a health and lifestyle content creator, known online as Nurse Judy KE. My platform is dedicated to educating, empowering, and encouraging  especially nurses and young women in Kenya and across Africa who are working to build better lives, whether at home or abroad.

My content focuses on:

  • Health education (especially practical, relatable wellness tips)
  • Migration and nursing abroad  the real, unfiltered truth
  • Motherhood and the realities of raising children in the diaspora
  • Faith, family, and mental resilience

What sets me apart?
Authenticity.
I don’t sugarcoat the journey. I share the wins and the wounds. People connect with me because I show up as I am a woman of strength but also softness; a nurse, but also a mother, a wife, and a dreamer. My story mirrors the lives of many African women who carry so much, give so much, and still rise.

I also don’t gatekeep. Whether it’s how to pass the NCLEX, get a green card, or juggle motherhood abroad  I share it all.
Why? Because when one of us wins, we all win.

What am I most proud of?

  1. Raising my children, Teiyan and Dashan, in love, dignity, and faith  together with my supportive husband, Denis Pasha.
  2. My nursing career.
  3. Building a platform that speaks life and light into others.
  4. Proving that you can come from Kariandusi and still touch the world.

What’s next?
I’m in a season of planting and building, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.

Professionally, I’m working toward further specialization in nursing possibly advancing into leadership or education. I want to create impact not just at the bedside, but at the systems level, especially in how care is delivered for immigrant communities.

I’m also investing more in growing my content platform with goals to expand beyond social media into:

  • Speaking engagements (nursing migration, women empowerment, mental health)
  • Collaborations with brands and health organizations aligned with my values
  • Workshops, masterclasses, or even an e-book on transitioning from nursing in Africa to the U.S.

Another dream I’m quietly nurturing is launching a mentorship and resource hub for aspiring nurses in Kenya and Africa. Whether physical or digital, I want to create a space that offers real, step-by-step guidance, encouragement, and community. I know how lonely and confusing this journey can be  and I want to be the person I needed when I started.

On the personal side?
I’m looking forward to more quality time with my husband Denis and our children  traveling together, making memories, and simply enjoying the life we’ve worked so hard to build. I also hope to visit home more often and, maybe one day, share more of my journey in a book.
