Daily Inspiration: Meet Joyce Lieberman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Lieberman

Hi Joyce, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Painting, Ceramic Sculptural Vessels, Gardening and now Papier Mache sculptures are my mediums.
I also make Videos of my my husband Jimm Juback’s original songs set against the background of our West Adams home with my paintings, gardening and sculptures featured.
We have had a few home concerts and enjoy meeting musicians and artists in our home.
At Art School at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, I studied Painting, Ceramics, Weaving and Fabric Design and Filmmaking. I am so happy to say that I use all those disciplines in my personal expression as an artist today.
Painting murals in high school and attending Art School at University of Michigan, BFA and MFA at University of Texas at Austin gave me a great context to spring from.
We took a train from Austin to LA in 1982 and I was thrilled by the energy of Art in LA at that time. Within a year, my husband Jimm Juback and I moved to Venice, where we stayed for 32 years until we couldn’t rent the bungalow at 664 Sunset Ave. due to rising real estate values. We looked for a year to find the best relocation and we found it in West Adams. We bought our first house and poured a lot of energy into making it a Garden of Eden for us. That included planting fruit trees which grew so fast in this fertile soil.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
L.A. is such a dynamic place. I love it. There are so many layers of things going on all at once.
Sometimes things don’t work out the way you think they might.
Finding the people and places that are enhanced by my artwork is a matter of luck, perseverance and discipline.
Working in my Venice studio for 30 years, my art was able to be included in many projects with hospitality.
That included personal residents, hotels, hospitals, corporate spaces and entertainment spaces.
I made a large series of collages that I called my “Personal Archaeologies”. Named so for trying to find the surface of my desk through all the bits of fabric and paper from travels and samples of fabrics.
Upcycling came naturally to me.
My older brother was involved in the Ecology movement of the 1970’s and saving precious materials to create a new woven work of art was a great way to rework monoprints and other projects already in play.
As a painter, I have enjoyed many sizes and surfaces. Paper, canvas, wood and cardboard are my favorite surfaces., I have tried a variety of surfaces, especially in large scale pieces. Some work better than others.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My most well known series of paintings are my “UNStill Life” series and my “Fiesta” series. These are lively colorful domestic tableaus that have a pop of color and a feeling of movement.
I have large bodies of works that include Trees, Blue Birds, Abstractions and Floral paintings.
Getting to plant the flowers that inspire me and live with them is a dream come true.
I am so grateful for the fertile soil that is L.A.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I love studio visits. I try to visit others in their studios also. Working with collectors to find the right piece and with curators to put together a collection for a show is a great way to collaborate.
Sometimes Musicians visit and play music with us, especially if they would like to play my husbands original songs with him and get involved in our videos. See the Jimm Juback channel on YouTube
