Daily Inspiration: Meet Joshua McKenney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua McKenney.

Hi Joshua, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a self-taught doll-maker living in LA. I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and moved to New York to attend Parsons School of Design. After school, I worked briefly in photography before going into fashion and beauty illustration. About eight years ago, I started my own line of dolls called Pidgin Doll. I sculpt, paint, wig, design, photograph, and produce everything myself. I work with my husband in Hollywood, California and this is what we do full time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is no doll-making school or classes so I am completely self-taught which leads to much trial and error. There have been many struggles along the way but like any artist, I take things one step at a time and have managed to carve out a career for myself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My dolls are known for their makeup looks and have inspired thousands of makeup tributes on Instagram. Check out the hashtag #PidginFanArt on Instagram to see them.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t be afraid of hard work.
