Daily Inspiration: Meet Jordan Topf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Topf.

Hi Jordan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Northern California, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean. A little surf town called Santa Cruz, where I picked up the guitar at age eight and began writing songs. I always felt like the feeling and sound of Northern California where I grew up played a vital role in my sound. As a kid I would sit in my bedroom for hours on end playing along to The Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones until my fingers became callused.

As a teenager I played in bands that would press our own CDs and book diy tours up and down the west coast before moving to New York at age 18. In college, I studied recording and would sneak into the studio at night to record demos for my band Mainland. Those demos eventually lead us to building a local following and a team around the band. We played locally for a few years at places like Pianos, Baby’s All Right, and Mercury Lounge.
After garnering buzz around our live shows we were signed and toured internationally for the next five years – supporting other artists, headlining, and playing festivals like Lollapalooza and SXSW. After being on the road for that long, we decided to take a break in 2019 and I focused more on writing and producing for other artists.

I landed my first cut as a songwriter on Hollywood Records with American Idol winner Maddie Poppe which snowballed into more and more co-writes. For the next year I wrote constantly, I flew to Nashville and wrote for pop and country, did sessions in LA, and spent all of 2019 songwriting and producing for other artists.

When the pandemic hit in early 2020, I went back to Northern California and began writing and recording what would become my first solo project Windser. I released my first single “July” and will be releasing my next single “Real Life” this February 26th.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say my journey has been full of surprises. Over the years, things have become easier to navigate because I’ve been making music for most of my life now. I’ve also become more in touch with what I want and more specific with how I want things to sound. Of course, there have been bumps along the way, but I’m proud of the person I’ve become because of those moments and the fact I’ve been able to get through those times.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer-songwriter and producer based in Echo Park, Los Angeles. I make music under the moniker Windser. I’d say I’m most proud of the things I’ve produced myself like the new Windser single “July”! Over the years, people have called my lyrics introspective, moody, and poetic. I’m heavily influenced by poets/writers like Sylvia Plath, Allen Ginsberg, and Arthur Rimbaud. Lyrical concepts are what drive a song’s creation for me. I’m a story teller and with that in mind the melody and the music shape themselves around my lyrics. I’m also obsessed with using vintage instruments to make modern sounds as well. I believe having unique instruments on hand during a session always sparks something special.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If you’re an artist and think we’d collaborate well, please feel free to reach out! I have a studio at my place in Echo Park where we are constantly creating. Also, the new Windser single “Real Life” will be dropping February 26th!
