Daily Inspiration: Meet John Alan Hulbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Alan Hulbert.

John Alan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I found a sense of belonging in a community based upon fear by walking folks into the lines of fear and proving to them that they’ll be okay on the other side once that fear has been faced.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s always important to embrace the idea of rejection because not everyone is going to fully accept who and what you are. It’s hard to embrace rejection, especially when you fear it, but when the acceptance comes, it’s an incredible feeling that makes all that rejection seem so small.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Performance Artist that specializes in Acting, Ballroom Dance, and Creature Work.

I believe that I’ve made some really beautiful things in the realm of horror. My whole philosophy on life and with horror is that the best way to fight off fear is to lean into fear. These monsters can be beaten, changed, or loved as they are when we just accept that they’re there and we do something about it.

I’ve been working as a Scare Actor for the LA Haunted Hayride since 2019 playing Herschel the Ice Cream Clown and a variety of other spooky characters. Whether it’s for the Hayride, their promos, special events, or even “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” on Disney+, I am in love with this job. I love that I get to scurry around the town of Midnight Falls scaring the bejesus out of folks, it’s an honor  to provide them with a scare and sense of relief followed by some laughter when they realize, “Oh, I’m okay! I did it!”

I reinforce that there is a lot to learn from monsters, whether they be the ones I play or the invisible ones within ourselves. They’re meant to be faced, I’m fortunate to work in a career where that’s made possible, and it’s not just through my creature work, but also dance.

On top of working in film and live performance, I’m a Ballroom Dance Instructor. Dancing used to be something that frightened me into stillness, which crushes my heart now knowing how much I love and need to move. Movement is one of the most vulnerable parts of ourselves that we can express, I deprived myself of joyous movement for so long. Once I found that joy, I refused to let it go. So I’ve dedicated a life and career to movement. Whether it’s elegant ballroom dance or creepy creature work, my heart belongs to the craft of moving through fear.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I credit my fear. That may seem odd to say, but I think I avoided the feeling for comfort. Comfort is important to feel, but there’s a difference between being comfortable and being complicit. When I finally acknowledged that I’m a fearful and anxiety-ridden person, it made me sit with the monster inside and really work out what it is I need to move through life joyously. It made me take my fear by the hand and make leaps and strides forwards.
