Daily Inspiration: Meet Jillian Fortner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Fortner.

Hi Jillian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story is only beginning. I got my start in the entertainment industry through community musical theater. I had minimal dance experience and no acting or singing training. I didn’t have high expectations for myself, I was just there to have fun. Over time, I realized I wanted to do more and more. Being on stage sparked a passion in me I never felt before. So I decided to invest more of my time into becoming a better performer. I started taking voice lessons and I’d practice singing every day in my garage. My grandma, with her musical background, was a huge help as well. I always benefitted from her honest feedback. I couldn’t afford to take acting lessons as well. I picked up tips by observing other performers around me. Although I was improving, it was a rough road. There was always someone who could sing better, act better, dance better. The competition and rejections were always there. Regardless, I persevered because it was important to me. I’m glad I continued because I started to see my hard work pay off when I recently booked my first professional job.

By senior year of high school, I was given an opportunity to be a student intern at a local news station followed by an internship at a performing arts center. These opportunities led me to a new passion, broadcast journalism. This opened a whole new arena of interest for me. I was able to become more involved in my community. When I graduated high school, I decided I was going to study Communications in college. As I work towards my degree, I plan to continue my acting career for as long as I can. It can be overwhelming to balance so many interests all at the same time. I’ve learned that when I really want something, I do what it takes to make time for it. Although it’s a busy schedule, it’s worth it if I get to pursue things I love! I’m looking forward to the future and the journey to come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every journey has its own struggles. I knew this path wouldn’t be easy and I’m sure there will be plenty of challenges to come. But that’s life. The entertainment industry is very competitive. I’ve faced plenty of rejections and have told “no” too many times to count. It can be extremely discouraging. It’s crucial to have a thick skin. Not everyone will have your best interest at heart. People in this industry can be exploitative and shady. Despite the challenges, I focus on keeping an honest heart. In the end, I’m so happy I get to pursue something I love. I’m thankful to have a great support system. My family and closest friends keep me well grounded.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Right now, I’m a full-time college student at SDCCD. My goal is to transfer to a four year university in order to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Communication. At my college, I’m a part of a weekly broadcast TV show. Currently, the show is produced virtually due to the pandemic. It is very hard work, but I find it exhilarating learning the production aspects of television. In addition to this busy schedule, I am still pursuing acting. I will jump at any opportunity to get on stage or in front of a camera.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Passion, perseverance and patience. I’ve always felt a very strong dedication and enthusiasm for performing. This is what keeps me going back through all the challenges. As I mentioned earlier, this is a difficult industry to succeed in. My uncle who’s in the business reminds me that you have to be prepared for 100 rejections before that one opportunity. Despite the obstacles, I remind myself to stay committed to my goals. With perseverance come patience. Success doesn’t come overnight. Finally, I just try to be optimistic and enjoy every step of the way.
