Jiayu Chen

Jiayu, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, I am Jiayu Chen from Shanghai. Currently studying at Art Center College of Design, based in Los Angeles and Shanghai, to achieve a career as a professional Industrial Designer and Brand Strategist.

My design journey is fueled by a passion for innovation, grounded in thorough research and an insightful understanding of the rationale behind every iconic design. This process enables me to convert imaginative concepts into tangible products.

I hold the conviction that exceptional design can profoundly improve human lives. My commitment is to embed this belief in my creations to enhance user experience and appeal aesthetically.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In this journey to become a pro in Industrial Design and Brand Strategy, hopping between Shanghai and Los Angeles has its own set of challenges. First off, blending the East and West design vibes to appeal globally is a big challenge. Then there’s the race with technology – it’s like trying to keep up with a sprinter; you’ve got to stay on your toes to weave the latest tech and trends into your work. And let’s not forget the creative crunch. Juggling the academic load and hitting those project deadlines while trying to keep the creative juices flowing is pretty intense. Also, finding that sweet spot where design meets practicality can be quite the balancing act. Plus, standing out in the crowded space of design and branding, making sure what I do resonates with people while also being true to market trends is a whole challenge on its own. But honestly, tackling these hurdles head-on is what makes this experience exciting.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My current focus is on the realm of consumer electronics design, yet my interests also span into the vibrant worlds of fashion, footwear, and brand strategy. In my work, I strive to harmonize form, functionality, and cutting-edge technology, drawing significant inspiration from my passion for groundbreaking tech and the dynamic flair of automotive design. Whether I’m sketching the initial concept for a new product or refining a 3D prototype, I aim to craft designs that are not only ahead of their time but also deeply rooted in practicality.

In addition to my design pursuits, I apply a strategic mindset underpinned by a robust background in branding and market research. To me, design is about more than just the superficial premium feel; it’s about enhancing the user experience in meaningful ways. I’m dedicated to creating designs that not only engage but also endure, embodying both innovation and timelessness.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My essential qualities revolve around innovation, strategy, and a user-centered approach. Innovation is at the core of everything I do—I’m always exploring the latest tech to push the boundaries of what’s possible in product design. Strategy comes into play with my background in brand strategy and marketing research. I don’t just design products; I design experiences that fit into a larger market narrative and meet real consumer needs. Lastly, everything I design is with the user in mind. I aim to create products that aren’t just a joy to look at but a delight to use, ensuring they add value and enhance daily life. These qualities drive my goal to create designs that are not just timely but timeless.
