Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Thach.
Hi Jenny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m originally from Boston, MA and moved to LA summer of 2022 after graduating Emerson College!
I was actually a very sporty and active kid and didn’t get into film until I was in middle school. I started as an editor before I became more of a director and storyteller. I remember back then, my dream was to be in the WNBA (I’m 5’2) and so I was so obsessed with basketball to the point where I started to edit basketball mixes and highlight tapes on YouTube. Surprisingly, some of it did pretty well, and I continued that hobby until I hit high school.
Cut to junior year of high school, where my dreams of being a basketball player died (shocker), and I had no idea what I wanted to do. One thing I did know was that I wanted to do something that I loved and enjoyed. During that time, my cousin Kevin Boston was working at a production company (he was also the person that named me – crazy!) and I called him up to ask if I can shadow/intern at the company he was working at since I was considering becoming a film editor. He was kind enough to let me crash at his apartment in LA. One week turned into the whole summer spent there. Projects after project, I was so fortunate enough to learn and work in such a fast-paced but incredible environment. I met amazing people that gave me advice and some whom I still keep in contact today!
After that summer, I went back home and knew exactly what I wanted to do. Instead of becoming an editor though, I aspired to write and create my own stories. I started to create concept music videos using my friends as actors and one of it actually hit a million views on YouTube! After that, my journey of becoming a director began 🙂
Today, I am a freelance filmmaker, editor, and colorist. I work mainly as a content creator for Marley Bleu 🙂 very grateful for all the people and experiences to get to where I am today!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, haha! I feel like anyone who is in the arts can relate. For me personally, moving across the country to a place that is so big and trying to have genuine relationships/friendships with people is hard. I was homesick a lot of the time and was struggling to find work after college. I’m very grateful to have lived and have friends who also moved to LA with me – we were pretty much all struggling together so it felt nice to not be alone on this journey. Everything takes time, and so I was holding onto that positivity and creating as much as I could, but also taking breaks whenever it felt right. I think the best thing that I did for myself was take a step back during those moments of creative block/being burnt out. I would just go out and try to meet new people/strangers and have conversations. I loved just listening to their stories.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m mainly known as a filmmaker/director and on the side I freelance edit and color! Currently I am a content creator for Marley Bleu and have been working with her for half a year so far! I work on all her visual content and am excited to show the world what we have been working on soon 🙂 I also love to create music videos and films. I’m trying to get more into commercials since those entice me as well.
I would say my video diaries series on Instagram is what I am most proud of and known for at the moment. They are mini short films on my diary entries and whatever’s on my mind at the moment, but most importantly, how I feel during that time. It’s all shot using my dad’s old VHS camera. I bring it around with me everywhere, and my friends are the focus of it most of the time 🙂 it’s like memories and just life seen through my eyes.
I would say I’m a pretty emotional person, LOL. I also think that is what sets me apart from others. I feel a lot of things very deeply, and I care for others a lot… sometimes more than myself, which can be a double-edged sword (ugh… empaths!) Haha, however! I also use it as my superpower since I can really bring that emotion and feeling out onto a screen. Feelings and stories that should be felt and heard to understand 🙂
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The main lesson that I learned during the COVID-19 crisis was to relax. To tell myself it’s okay to take a break and not work 24/7 – it’s not going to set you back for resting. I tend to overwork myself and during COVID was one of the rare times where I was pretty much doing absolutely nothing for weeks. But what came from that was the most creatively inspired that I have ever been, and that was when I made my first video diaries.
