Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Shaw.
Hi Jenny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I immigrated to the US with my family in 1983. While raising my two children and helping with the family business, I also took art classes at the community college. I have been in many local and national exhibitions and competitions, but it was not until the year 2002 that I had my first solo exhibition at the American Club International in Taipei, and it was a sold-out exhibit. I had another solo exhibit in Newport Beach in 2009; besides many joint shows, I also did a few commission works, and the largest painting I did was a 48″x60″. I moved to Los Angeles in 2018 and started to paint non-stop, so far, I have solo exhibitions every other year and my art is collected by lovers all over the world, including England, Canada, Ireland, Taiwan, and many cities in the US.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
All artists are busy painting in their studios and have little connections with the art world on the market; even with the help of technology, it is very time and energy-consuming to learn and present themselves on the marketing platforms. I am grateful to be able to paint for the soul not for the dough, but because I paint almost every day and I love to challenge myself so I am very prolific, the problem is how do I share my art with the world?
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do mixed-media contemporary abstract paintings on canvas and paper; I incorporate an array of drawing tools such as oil stick, pastel, pencil, charcoal, and ink to make interesting lines, together with layers of color and texture, they implicit the mood, movement, energy, and sometimes, mysterious stories. The comments from my collectors are: ” I have never seen anyone paint like this”, ” Your art makes me happy”…
What I am most proud of is that I strive for boundless creativity like an untethered boat wandering freely and fearlessly in the water, and my inspiration is imbued by my passion for music, literature, dance, and drama; all these make my art a one of a kind.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I started ballet at age 68 to fulfill my other childhood dream, four classes a week get me out of my studio to be with the crowd, moving my body with the music, and pretending I am a beautiful ballerina makes me very happy.
