Daily Inspiration: Meet Jay Dekony

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Dekony.

Hi Jay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a creative kid, seeing the beauty in the world. When I grew up, I was going to school for accounting, something in safe and secure, before realizing that was not what brought me joy. I made the decision to drop out of school, fully pursue art, and I am proud to say I have been ever since. Currently, I own a creative based company bringing visual art to everyday life through the medias of filmmaking and photography. I feel very lucky that I get to not only capture people’s most special moments and memories, but also tell their stories through my creative lens.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road, but nothing worth doing is. We’ve experienced some very rapid growth that has pushed us quickly to our boundaries and forced us to learn our limits, how to best take care of ourselves along the way. Taking care of your mental health is equally as important as keeping up the physical. Art comes from a place inside, and being able to tap into that as needed is an integral skill. Keeping yourself mentally healthy goes a long way.
Another growing pain I’ve experienced is stepping outside of my shell. I am, at heart, a quiet, comfortable, internal person, and I’ve learned that taking steps outside of that comfort is what my business needs. In order to be the I the leader I want to be, a decisive one when the situation calls for it, I’ve learned I need to speak up. I need to rely on my knowledge when I can and my instinct when necessary. Owning a business and making art isn’t easy, but I can do this, and I will continue to keep proving that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a filmmaker and photographer, and I specialize in creating cinematic, story-driven art. Because both mediums are accessible to me, I tend to think “film first” regardless of what I am shooting which gives my photos, not just my films, a more movement-based foundation. This leans my work across the board into a cinematic viewpoint, and I believe this is something that sets me apart from others. I’m proud of the places my work has taken me, both physically and mentally, and the opportunities I’m lucky enough to take. I relish that I get to spend my days making art and flexing my creative muscles, and I found an unexpected joy in the process of building my business to the place it is today, and to wherever else it chooses to take me.
