Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Zhao
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Jasmine Zhao, a filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California. I grew up in Beijing, China, where I was deeply influenced by traditional Chinese culture—something that often finds its way into my storytelling and visual style. Over the years, traveling through Europe also expanded my creative horizons and exposed me to diverse artistic expressions, which have helped shape my unique cinematic perspective.
As a filmmaker, I’m passionate about telling stories that advocate for women’s rights and promote independence, especially for women from immigrant backgrounds. I believe in using film as a powerful tool to amplify voices that often go unheard, and I’m committed to creating narratives that inspire, empower, and spark conversation.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Before moving here, and even when I lived in London, no one ever asked me, “You’re from Beijing? What’s it like down there?” It was a question I never really thought to ask myself—what is it like in Beijing? What is it like being from there?
When I got to LA, these questions started to surface in a way that forced me to reflect on my roots and my identity. It wasn’t just about where I came from—it was about who I am and how my background shapes the stories I want to tell. It’s been a challenge navigating those questions, especially in a city like LA, where so many cultures collide, and it’s easy to feel like you’re caught between worlds. But over time, I’ve learned to embrace that complexity and use it as a strength in my work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in expressing emotion through visuals. I believe that a powerful image can tell a story that words sometimes can’t. What I’m most proud of is my cultural heritage and my ethnicity. Growing up in Beijing, I was deeply influenced by the richness of traditional Chinese culture, and I carry that pride into my work, especially in how I approach storytelling and visual composition.
Another strength of mine is my ability to problem-solve. I think what sets me apart from others is my unique perspective, shaped by both my Chinese roots and my experiences living in different parts of the world. I’m passionate about telling stories that explore identity, women’s rights, and the immigrant experience, and I use my work as a platform to give a voice to those whose stories might otherwise go unnoticed.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The key to working with me is honest communication. I believe in open, transparent conversations where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and feedback. Collaboration is at the heart of what I do, whether it’s with fellow filmmakers, crew members, or the people whose stories I tell. If you’re interested in collaborating, I welcome those who share a passion for storytelling and a commitment to making meaningful, impactful work. Support can come in many forms—whether that’s sharing your expertise, connecting with me on a project, or simply offering encouragement along the way.
