Daily Inspiration: Meet Jamaal Barnes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaal Barnes.

Hi Jamaal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story in East LA started when my family was looking for a youth football program for my son Jayden. Fate landed us in East LA at the East LA Bulldogs Youth Football Program. I was a volunteer coach for my son Jayden’s team along side now head coach Patrick Vargas of the Garfield Football program. Which brings us to 15 years later being part of the East LA Community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the main struggles to start off my coaching career at Garfield was taking over the program during the pandemic and teaching the game of basketball through Zoom. We only had two weeks to prepare for season in person and with limited resources, in example limited gym time, and not enough uniforms. I also had to transition from Dad to Coach as my son Jayden was also a part of the basketball program. I’ll have to say that was a big challenge for the both of us.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a full time Coach and I dedicate myself to coaching and training my own kids. During the off season I train college kids all the way down to elementary level and I also coach AAU during the off season.
During the off season it’s early mornings and late nights. We work on strength and conditioning, skill work in the gym and conditioning at the beach.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like most about East LA is its rich tradition and the way community comes together to support the youth of Garfield High School.
There is nothing I dislike, but I would like to see more resources for our inner city youth.
