Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalawni Appling.
Hi Jalawni, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always had a passion for the beauty industry. I began styling my own hair which later turned into me becoming a stylist for others. During the pandemic, I started to realize that working for myself was a newfound lifetime goal of mine. I spent seven years working in retail, working for someone else. Although having a job is a blessing in itself, I found myself losing sight on what makes me happy and feel accomplished at the end of the day. Creating @fauxever_locd and becoming a stylist makes me feel whole and eager for work every day. I find that I’m not only a stylist but I am also an artist, a therapist, a homegirl, and a businesswoman all wrapped into one. Making women feel beautiful and happy makes me feel complete, especially as a natural hairstylist.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a rough road, especially during the pandemic. Becoming your own boss is a huge and risky step. There may be days where you may not know if you’re going to make a profitable income to live off of. I realized that I would get in my own way when it comes to taking the next steps due to my fear of failing. FauxEver Loc’d is my baby and I only want the best for my business. I had to realize that my business will never grow and be as successful as I want it to be if I continue to doubt myself and my abilities. We are so capable of being who we want to and achieve every goal we set by just taking that leap of faith and believing in ourselves.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a natural hairstylist who specializes in Loc’s and faux Loc’s. My business FauxEver Loc’d allow my customers to fall in love with their natural hair and realize how beautiful Loc’s and natural hair can be. I opened my hair business the beginning of 2021 and I’m so proud of the growth that I’ve seen. What sets me apart from others would have to be my customer service. I don’t view my clients as just a customer. When my client walks through my door, I can become their homegirl, therapist, comedian, or just someone that can make them feel FauxEver Beautiful.
What matters most to you?
Becoming a successful businesswoman that others can look up to matters the most to me. I want to show other women that you can be anything you want and aspire to be. I find that as women, we are constantly told what to do. From our hair to our careers. I want young women to know that entrepreneurship is possible. Being your own boss and successful is possible. We are not limited to how society and others view us.
