Today we’d like to introduce you to JacEil Duckworth-Howard.
Hi JacEil, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi I’m Jac’Eil Duckworth – Howard
I’m a mother of a handsome 15 year old son name Prince Drummond, I’m also an entrepreneur in the hair industry & realty star. I’m from a small town in Mississippi called Gautier. I have 2 older brothers and a younger sister. I started out as a young girl about 8 years old with a passion for hair. I remember taking hair supplies with me to redo my hair on the bus because my mom or grandmother could do hair. By middle school I had several clients I would do their hair in gym class I used to charge $15 to $20 dollars a style. One of my clients still owe my $15 to this day lol. I enjoyed making others look and feeling good. By the time I was in high school I was bringing in good money doing hair at my grandmothers home where I lived. I would always give her half of the money (that she never wanted) but I always seem to convince her that I didn’t need so much money at a young age. My grandmother always open her home for me to run my business that I would later be a successful story. My family wanted me to go to the military after high school. I knew I wasn’t going. I know how talented I was & how successful I would be. I used to talk about the life that I’ve been blessed with now. I attended Blue Clifff College in Gulfport Mississippi where I was the first cosmology student to graduate early. I remember not having a car but finding me way to school 45 mins away and staying during my lunch to get ahead incase I had to miss a day. I never missed a day of cosmology school. I graduated go into a salon where I would become successful with specializing in natural healthy hair, glue- less wigs install & having a successful hairline. My first day in the salon I mask 600+ i remember my beauty school teacher telling us in the first two years it would be a struggle making money. God said otherwise because from that day forward I was on the road to success. A lof of sleepless nights, early morning late night perfecting my craft. 6 years later I will venture out and open my own salon with my co owner Tirrany Frost. We’ve ran a successful business called the TAKE OVER BARBER AND BEAUTY BAR for the last 10 years. We created jobs for others & I own products. I absolutely love taking care of hair, educating & making my clients smile. I would later go on and star on Basketball Wives LA with my now wife Natasha Howard who plays with the Indiana fever (WNBA) we were the FIRST LGBTQ COUPLE to star in BASKETBALL WIVES LA. We were blessed for the experience but that move honestly wasn’t for me. I couldn’t see myself hurting other woman with their own trauma. I love those ladies & I’ve made great connections that I’m blessed to have forever. I’m always rooting for them.
Im excited to be relaunching my hairline, rebranding our products and tapping into the fashion industry. I love fashion and my hopes are one day being invited to every fashion event possible in hopes of meeting my favorite person in fashion Teyana Taylor.
I enjoy feeding the homeless. One day my Dream is to make small spaces for for homeless people to sleep somewhere safe and have a hot meal. Everybody deserves to be in a safe environment while they’re sleeping.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve faced so many obstacles/ challenges in life. I could talk about so many situations. it started when I was younger. I was a kid who didn’t take any mess. I always stood up for what was right but on the other hand I wanted more attention from my parents which were teenagers parents. It interfered with my thoughts a lot. ( now that I’m older with a son i understand that my mom worked two jobs to make sure we had things we needed & wanted.) When I got to high school I was still out of control a little. I didn’t know where life was taking me. I was used to hearing from teachers I’ll never be anything in life until I ran into Top Jackson & Mrs. Grantham those two help change my life. They poured into me. Made me realize how talented and important I was. They always instilled in me that I was a leader. That still follows my to this day. Between those two teacher and my grandmother I’m blessed to be successful the way I am. Without obstacles/challenges you’ll never know how great of a person
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve been a licensed cosmologist for the 16 years. I’ m a hair genius “literally.” I’m infatuated with learning everything I can about hair/the industry. I specialize in healthy hair & scalp which is significantly important in our industry. I went viral on TikTok for my knowledge and the way I take care and style my clients hair.
What makes me stand out the most is I take pride in respecting my clients always giving them a safe space. I don’t keep my clients in the salon all day. I think it’s important to respect your clients time as much as we like them to respect ours. I have a very open mind of learning. I feel you’re never too old to learn. Another thing I don’t focus on is the money. Of course i have to make money but it’s a difference. I do the things I love that blesses me with financial independence. I want to always be in love with what I do before I’m in love with the money. That mindset has been a game changer for me. I love dropping gems. Making away for others to be successful.
