Today we’d like to introduce you to Iman Muhammad.
Hi Iman, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started my content creation back in my dorm when I attended Norfolk State University in 2019. I would always post about what I was doing throughout my day, whether it was going to class, my outfit for the day, the organizations/activities I was involved or hanging out in the local Norfolk area. I always looked at it as a way to not only express my creativity, but I would always receive messages from people who followed me about how me documenting my journey inspired them to either want to attend college or simply just follow after their dreams. And that’s when it hit me that maybe I should start taking this more seriously. Especially if it can have such a positive impact on others like this.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road whatsoever. For one, once COVID hit for me everything kind of shifted and my focus became to just graduate on time which I did in the spring of 2021. In the midst of it all I just I lost my passion for it. But as time progressed, I found myself being so inspired by many other content creators I followed such as Shay Nicole, IeshatheGr8, and so many others that they are unaware of how they reignited that creative spark I once had. And I knew if they could have that impact on me, then I would do the same for those whose stories were similar to mine.
Also, we know that social media is constantly growing and evolving, so it can be very hard to keep up. Not only are you trying to keep your spark ignited but you are constantly fighting with algorithms and hitting certain numbers that sometimes can be such a headache. Which is why it is so important to remain yourself and not get caught up in all the fuss. Make content that is genuine to who you are and what you enjoy. Tell you story and find ways to make others smile and I promise God will do the rest.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am Content Creator based out of Los Angeles, CA. I love to share all things fashion, food, and beauty while also finding ways to inspire my audience to love on themselves the best way they can. I am most proud of just reaching 3,000 followers on Instagram. I know to some it may not seem like a lot but for a girl who has been grinding the last year to build a genuine community; it feels like I am finally starting to reap the benefits of it all.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I truly care about my audience. I will never share advice or tips on anything if I have not had a full experience with something, whether it be a life experience, a fashion piece, a beauty tip, etc. I just want to continue to be a light to others the way people have been to me because in reality all we have is each other.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think the best mentors are those who push you beyond your boundaries and beliefs while also supporting your dreams, so it is very important to find someone you can trust. A mentor also does not have to be in the same career field as you as well because you can find inspiration in people for multiple reasons. Also, try reaching out to some people you inspire and shoot your shot respectfully; you never know until you try.
