Today we’d like to introduce you to Humberto Cruz Jr.
Hi Humberto, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m an illustrator and graphic designer based in San Diego, CA. I have always been interested in art, and I started drawing at a very young age.
I studied graphic design in San Diego. I wanted to get into the editorial business, but it was very hard. I was not able to get a full time in graphic design and it was very stressful for many years. Almost gave up in that field. But then, I started drawing by hand again and social media was invented. I started posting on Instagram in 2011, I believe, daily! It became a habit. I started posting drawings of celebrities and fashion icons and I would tag them in my posts. Some of them would notice and repost on their Instagram pages. That helped growing my followers. I did that for a while, then I started working on digital collages and more hand-drawn art.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been rough! I had to take a few breaks from social media. Probably the pressure of posting and not feeling very inspired all the time. That’s why it’s important to stay away from your phone and do other stuff. Nothing is easy, and if you really want something, you just keep doing. It becomes a habit that you enjoy!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to draw my own characters, stay creative writing positive quotes. I like fashion photography and I like to work on collages. It’s a combination of everything. I like to keep it colorful, fun and positive. I like to keep my work true to myself. I’m known for working with a lot of color. And I’m most proud of not giving up on art! Every project I’ve worked on is important to me. That makes me proud. What sets me apart from others? All artists are different and I think it’s a good thing to not compare yourself to others.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
It’s good to take risks but also it’s important to stay in your own path. You know how far you can go when you start something new. What you do is a reflection of who you are, and you don’t want a drastic change to what you’re used doing.
