Today we’d like to introduce you to Hui Long.
Hi Hui, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I graduated from Goldsmiths University of London and I am currently based in London. My work is basically based on “myself”. I switched from business to photography and the change was only due to my persistence. I was forced to choose business at university due to my family’s obstacles, but I didn’t give up self-study photography during my undergraduate studies and at the end of my degree, my family saw my persistence and love for it and started to support me to study photography. It was all an interest that sustained me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
First of all, the first obstacle I encountered was my family. My parents did not support me to learn photography at the beginning. They thought it was a very hard job for girls. In the traditional cognition of Chinese parents, Girls should choose some easy and pleasant jobs. But after several years of proof in my university, they finally recognized my ability and determination and started to study photography in graduate school. The second obstacle comes from myself. There are some gaps in art history and theory between me and those who studied photography as an undergraduate. Before that, I was more concerned with technology and self-expression but lacked some systematic theoretical knowledge. I worked hard during the graduate year catch up.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hui Long is Photographer, Art director. She graduated with Distinction with MA The electronic and images at Goldsmiths University of London, currently based in London. During her years as a freelance photographer, she has worked with many brands, exhibited in Paris, London, Shanghai, and Beijing, China, and published in British GQ Magazine, Sicky Magazine, and others. Her work is mostly about exploring women and the self, inspired mainly by her personal experiences growing up, some trauma she suffered as a child is her muse, she always extracts the most worthy parts from the intricate and blurred memories and evolves them for the viewer to see, but always reluctant to show too much, she hopes and expects the viewer to read another fragmented self in her work.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The creative process makes me happy, this is my own time. At the same time, when the works I spend time and energy on are seen by many viewers, and the comments are also the motivation to continue to inspire me to continue creating. If some viewers can get some healing power from my works, it is the greatest affirmation to me.
